One of the best books I've read this year
This is a great memoir. It's very personal and makes us think about our own family we have lost. The reference to Korean food is also brilliant and I can't wait to go to a Korean restaurant and maybe try kimchi.

Painful, sad
A beautifully written book where food and love of a dying mother come together, effecting greater understanding. Just a little tedious hearing so much about the food, hence 4 not 5, but a good read nonetheless.

I feel as if I was there with her
We have twice visited South Korea and to read this book was like a third visit. I can understand the desire to recreate the dishes although we do not have the markets with such variety here. Also an interesting story of a mother and daughter relationship.

not as good as I expected
I feel bad for rating a memoir so low as I really enjoy them and someone else's life experiences are as valid as our own...I don't know who the author is and, whereas I feel sorry for her loss and empathise with her as I am an orphan, this book looks like she wrote it to make peace with herself and her loss rather than for people to read it.There were nice moments but most of it was pretty boring. Too much description of food and jumps back and forth in time.

Great read
I really enjoyed this book, both for the insight into the grief of losing a parent (and trauma of seeing a parent suffer with a terminal illness) and also the cultural aspects. It left me desperate to try some Korean cuisine, even travel a bit! The journey to self discovery, dealing with past trauma, generational family trauma, realising that your parents are flawed humans, I think are things lots of people can relate to.

Needed to review in a book club.Interesting but difficult to follow all the unusually-named recipes.Too much like a young girl's diary fory liking, sorry.

Beautifully written and helpful book
For anyone who has lost their own mother recently, it effectively covers the topic of grieving. This makes it an extremely valuable tool to navigate the process of grieving.
