No, you don't NEED it. But, that being said, I love this thing... It didn't make much of a difference in my bread loaves but I do love it. It makes me happy when I bake because it's a special little luxury that I bought for myself. The sides of the bread get a little more evenly browned when I use this vs a Dutch oven but I didn't NEED this. Also the enamel on one of the handles chipped within a couple weeks of owning it (little black dot on the handle on the right is the chip in the enamel) but... Whatever... I bake with it.

This is an excellent product. Exceptional quality and craftsmanship. The color is beautiful and bakes a wonderful loaf of bread. I would have added a picture of the bread but it was eaten immediately! If you love to bake artisan breads, please don’t hesitate to make this purchase. It will make you happy!

Started baking sourdough and initially used a dutch oven. Still have the dutch oven but I use this one every single time. Actually, I love this one so much that I bought a second one and will probably buy a third. I bought the Sage Green.

Makes a PERFECT loaf! The BEST loaf I’ve ever made. It’s pretty heavy though. It chipped on the handle today, but i will overlook it.

Very very heavy! Love the way it allows bread to brown all side when baking SD without the lid. Most have a deep bottom so sides of bread are still inside when lid is removed. Weight problem solved with hubby lifting in and out of oven for me. Beautiful blue color.

Extremely happy with this pan. It browns the bread all around due to the shape of the dome. It seems to make a crispier crust than my dutch ovens. My only issue is with the silicone liner that comes with it. When you use the liner, the lid doesn't close completely so it lets steam out. I've been using parchment paper with my loaves instead.
