No you cannot or it’ll boil over and/or damage the device. It’s a kettle, not a teapot or a saucepan. Kettles should only ever heat water in them. You pour the hot water from the kettle into your teapot or your cup to make your drink.

Q: How loud is the ready beep? I don't like loud noises in the morning or want my kids waking up.

The three beeps are not loud. They’re rather quiet but effective. I doubt they would wake your children.
