No I have never noticed any oder when it heats up. I love mine.

Q: I put the brush on a low heat setting to do my daughter's hair, but now i can't get the temp above 230. is it broken? stuck button? may i return?

This might have been accidentally set to the Celsius mode and 230 is the highest temperature in Celsius. You can switch it back by pressing the + and - button simultaneously. This should do it . Or contact Megawise official live chat support if the issue persists.
