Q: Can this. pump transmission and engine oil ?

Pump is only good in the garbage

Q: Could I use one of these with a rain barrel

I imagine you could to pump the rain water out. When the hose is too long it does not work that great. So I would say about a foot of hose is the max

Q: There is no direction of rotation molded onto the pump body. Which way is "forward?"

If you take the pump apart you will see the fins are bi-directional and it all depends what setting you have your drill in Forward/Reverse. I will say if you use it in one direction for a while that the fins will where in that way so better to keep you transferring in one direction.
