Q: What’s the advantage of using this over just drawing out the margins on regular notebook paper?

Same advantage there is from taking a blank piece of paper and drawing lines on it to create the equivalent to notebook paper.

Q: Are these pads narrow or college ruled?

Hi, They are Colleged ruled and this system of note taking is called Cornell. If you want to shop for a better quality, try searching on the Cornell System or Cornell Note Taking. The system was developed by Cornell University and was chosen by the students to be the best way to take and keep notes. I say all this because it seems some people are unhappy with the printing on the pads on occasion. The notes are suppose to be taken on a pad with light grey printing, so your notes stand out and not all the lines and headings. There are lots of choices out there. Have fun looking and note taking. This system def got me through college.

Notepads are sold individually unless site says otherwise online. Always shop for a better price. I bought them $2.99 on sale.

Q: Is this paper compatible with fountain pens?

Ah, you forced me to get out my late father's Diplomat and gas it up. It appears that, though the paper is thin, Mont Blanc royal blue permanent ink will not bleed through. Frankly, I'm surprised but seeing is believing.
