Q: Is this hatchet good for carving?

This hatchet comes razor sharp and the size makes it easy to handle. You can choke up nicely on the axe head so it’s a great tool for carving.

Q: What’s the handle width at largest point? Looking to size it for belt holster

The butt is the widest point and its 50mm

Q: Can anyone recommend a sharpening stone for this axe? One that's not fifty dollars but does the same job?

Depending on your purposes, pretty much any stone may do or you may need something specialist. When I got mine I spent a few hours working the bevels down with a file for wood carving, then a couple more with a fine grit Diamond stone I think I paid $10 for, then a couple more with a leather strop and polishing compound. You may get by nicely with just a cheap Diamond stone if you’re less demanding off your blade.

Q: why so much? I see it on another site for 82.50 .

The price on these axes varies rather dramatically over time. I’ve seen it at $160, I’ve seen it at $80. Same with the Granfors Bruk. Also I’ve read others say watch out for knock offs - they are not at all ashamed to put up a cheap copy and do everything they can to make you believe it’s legit.
