Hello, Eleanor! Concerns around coral reef safety are becoming more prevalent and legislators, as well as manufacturers, are taking action. The Hawaii state legislature recently passed a bill requiring that all sunscreens, to be sold in Hawaii as of 2021, must be free from two sunscreen ingredients, namely oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been associated with possible adverse marine environment effects, including damage to coral reefs. For years, Alba Botanica has been proactive on this front and has removed these ingredients from our sunscreens. As of July 2017, we can proudly state that all Alba Botanica sunscreen lotions, sprays, sticks and lip balms* actively being produced do not contain oxybenzone or octinoxate. Please note that some retailers may still have minimal inventory of our old formulations so, to ensure any product is reef safe, it’s important to check labeling to ensure the products are free from oxybenzone and octinoxate.
