"H" is for Homicide: A Kinsey Millhone Novel

I am rereading this series because I enjoyed it a number of years ago. Great light reading to settle my mind at night before bed.

"H" is for Homicide is a typical fun reading experience authored by Sue Grafton. This is the eighth novel of a series. The novel is of medium length and is highly readable. I like the writing style of Sue Grafton in general more than I like this particular story. I particularly enjoy Sue Grafton's way of describing scenes and scenery. She also has a peculiar sense of humor that I enjoy. I also purchased the accompanying audiobook narrated by Mary Peiffer. Again, I really enjoy Mary Peoffer's narration more than the actual story. I feel that Mary Peiffer really has a sense of the tone the author wishes to convey. The protagonist in this series is Kinsey Millhone, a thirty something year old female private detective. She is a very interesting combination of femininity and toughness. She puts me in mind of a modern female version of a "Noir" private detective from the past. I enjoy the stories on the whole, but it is difficult to keep coming up with realistic stories. This is a good but not great story. As a retired police officer I find a lot of this story to be completely foreign to my professional life. However I continue to be a big fan of Sue Grafton and Kinsey Millhone. In summary I am glad to have read this story. I am reading all of Sue Grafton's novels in order. I find Mary Peiffer to be an excellent narrator for this series. However, standing on its own, this is just an average story. Thank You...

I think it’s a great idea but crammed into the author’s very tight time frame. She wants to complete it all within her hard time constraints and it shows. Characters are developed by showing how terrible and violent they act and their criminality, not by any careful, well-paced evolution in the story. I’m finding, after having read 5 stories, how bleak the world Kinsey inhabits is. I guess because she pursues bad people that’s what everything looks like through her eyes. It would have made her more attractive if she had bothered to learn some Spanish while growing up in Southern California.

This series and this writer is a favorite of mine. But this is different .Therr is more violence than I expected and the characters are less interesting than usual. I cannot relate to them or care about them The plot is contrived and unbelievable to me But. I will read more of the series because I have enjoyed several of the others and consider this just not my cup of tea

Another five-star review from me! I’m reading the Kinsey Millhone novels in order and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed them all. Her writing brings me back to another time in history, and another way of life - no cell phones, no internet, and 80’s fashion to name a few. I love Grafton’s descriptive style of writing. I can get a perfect vision in my mind’s eye of where they are, what they’re wearing, what they’re feeling, even what is being eaten! This story is very different from the previous books in that most of it takes place from the viewpoint of those who are living a life of crime - insurance fraud to be exact. There’s always a point in Grafton’s novels when the mystery is solved. In this book she keeps you hanging until the bitter end - and then, bam! Highly recommend this and her other novels, A through G. On to I for me!

H for Homicide has a very 90s nostalgia to it. I enjoyed this relaxing easy read. Kinsey has more lives than a cat.

What can you say about Sue Grafton other than she is a great mystery writer. Kinsey Milhone is an ex-cop and has her own detective agency and never much of a sex life if that what your looking for, go elsewhere. This is a traditional gumshoe story with action and danger for our heroine. After some spotty success writing books, Grafton changed to writing screenplays for TV and movies. With the success of her first Alphabet series book ' A is for Alibi' in 1982 it has continued to date. I first discovered her books when I came across 'G is for Gumshoe' (pub 1990) in a recycle center in 2000, I proceeded to local bookstores and Amazon to acquire all of this series up until the current at the time 'O is For Outlaw'. It's always great when you come across a great series in progress as it's a joy just reading book after book from a great writer. Much like 'binge watching TV series on Netflix nowadays. Only problem with an ongoing series is waiting for the next book. Grafton has done only a couple of yearly books and mostly every other year since 'P is for Peril' in 2001. It is now up to just plain 'X' in 2015 and will end with 'Z is for Zero'. I'm hoping she has Y & Z completed as she is 75 now and I'm 70 and don't want to miss the conclusion of this great series.

This novel keeps you entertained from beginning to end! A gripping story that you won't want to put down. Sue Grafton has done it again!

Always a great read. I'm half way through the alphabet series and have loved everyone of them.

I enjoyed the book and have read all of her books in the series and loved them all.
