Is the outlet always active/on? It doesn't become inactive because you then the lamp off right?

If you plug this into a regular outlet (not controlled by a room's light switch) and use the pull chain to toggle the lamp on and off, the outlet will always be active. However like the first reviewer, I use this lamp in a room with no overhead light. I have it plugged into the outlet controlled by the room's light switch. So if I use the light switch to control the lamp, the outlet is only active when the lamp is on.

I'd probably change the shade. how does it attach to the lamp? spider, clip on, uno, harp?

You have unscrew the black plastic nut first, then put the shade on, screw back on the black plastic nut, then put in your bulb. The shade will then be solid and stable with the lamp itself.

Are these mercury free?

Mercury emissions from lamps don’t come from the lamp itself, but from the lightbulbs that you choose. As you get to select your own light bulb, it definitely can be mercury free! While lightbulbs containing mercury have to be specially disposed of or recycled at mercury reclamation camps, they’re actually better for the environment because they last about 10 times longer than non-mercury bulbs.
