On the one hand the 3M Masker does attach masking tape to the edge of the 3M masking film, and this can save some time. However, the black flexible edge is too thin and weak to its job whilst also having a decent lifespan. Mine has split after just a couple of uses which is, frankly, pathetic. It's also very difficult to tear off a length of film/tape in the same way that you might tear off clingfilm from a dispenser that has a serrated edge. The black edge on the 3M Masker makes it very difficult to get the film to make contact with the cutter, which causes a shredded mess rather than a clean cut. This starter set is priced at £90 and based on my experience so far I wouldn't recommend it at that price point.

Nowt wrong with the actual masker but it looked like the package had been previously opend and then tie wrapped closed. Sides were open. The belt clip was not in the package. That was very dissapointing.

Very useful and effective for masking and protecting wooden floor from drips while painting. I am not a professional painter or a handyman but chose to paint several rooms and baseboards myself, spread over three weeks, for budgetary reasons. I bought the unit because I had resolved to reduce the prep tedium by spending money on tools to save time. I hope I don't have to buy another such unit ever again, but I feel I have got my money's worth from it and am very glad to recommend it to other DIY painters like me. Once you get used to it, it will improve your productivity, reduce cleanup time and effort, and give you crisp painting results. Read, Watch and Learn by doing. This is not a tool for the casual DIY. Unless you are naturally very handy, it takes a lot of patience and practice to learn how to use it without hurting yourself. The learning curve is steep, I spent 1/2 a day reading many reviews on Amazon.com and watching several YouTube "How To" videos to learn how to setup and use the hand masker. I got more comfortable with using it within a couple of days and very confident with it within the first week. Snapping the blade in and out to adjust to different masking tape widths is especially hard with a brand new until since the arm holding the blade fits very tightly on the buttons from which it extends. The blade is sharp and merciless. I was wearing two layers of gloves, thin inside and thick leather outside to protect my hands, to twist and snap the arm off. The protective liner on the blade was a hinderance and prevented clean tears. After a couple of days of frustration, I removed it and have been able to use the unit with the dangerous blade exposed. This is not recommended practice but I saw other painters had done it and lived to tell their tale! Find safe storage. Respect that blade, you can seriously hurt yourself! Disassemble the blade and keep the entire until enclosed in a box out of reach of children or even curious adults (especially yourself) after you are done.

This tool has made my painting jobs so much faster and less frustrating. I’m using it on my exterior next.
