Yes, the saw is capable of ripping, as well as making cross cuts. However, with cross cutting, limit this saw, with its very small teeth, to ripping materials up to 1/2".It's slow going---the small teeth fill up quickly with sawdust---make long pull-cutting strokes, so as to allow the sawdust from between the teeth to fall-out---and maintain a a low cutting angle of the blade to the workpiece and make slow steady pull-cuts. When ripping material of 1/2" and larger, use a saw with larger teeth (less teeth per inch), and with saw teeth designed for rip cutting. Rip-saw cutting teeth are like little chisels---that "chisel" away the material when it's cutting---they have deeper gullets to carry the chops away.This saw is okay for small work. For cutting larger size work pieces, a longer bladed saw is more effective.When cutting dovetails, tenons and the like, a saw with a stiff back is more effective and better to obtain controlled cuts.

A wonderful tool, but it would not be ideal for cutting curves, esp. small radius curves. For that, I'd go with a scroll saw (for tiny curves) or a band saw.
