I have been using this Scanmarker for the past 4 months. In general I have been most impressed with its performance. I use it to read mainly German texts and have it translate and then recite in English. The translations are generally adequate, not perfect but very understandable. I am impressed by its capacity to read and decode various print characters. The physical form of the Scanmarker is, at first, not very easy to hold in the correct position but I got used to it. I expected to have trouble in keeping it aligned over the text, but that is not the case. I have had no difficulty tracing the printed line. The plastic guide, for example, is not needed. I generally read several lines at a time. Moving from one line to the next is not a problem. While using it linked to Bluetooth headphones and Wifi, the battery seems to last about 2 and half hours of continuous use. Recharging is easy. I am not an addict of small mobile electronic gadgets, but I do like this Scanmarker. My criticisms would be easy to rectify. The documentation provided in the box is excessively simplified. The suppliers probably believe that the Scanmarker itself will do the job automatically, but it would have been very helpful for me at the start to have more detailed instructions. Information on the internet site is better and more helpful. However, for a machine that is supposed to translate with precision, linguistic errors in both the printed and internet texts do not give a good impression. Nevertheless, overall I would recommend it for reading, translating and speaking short texts.

This pen helped my daughter so much! She has been in a resource classroom for ELA (English language art) since 2nd grade. She worked really hard to read but still has some difficulty. She just started high school and her IEP was rewritten to a extreme after a sever head injury. I pushed for her new school to retest her because I knew she was doing better and the resources class setting at her high school didn’t seem fully appropriate for her. She strategizes as well, uses her own supports and her reading skills have improved but they were still not up to grade level, she is dyslexic. They tested her with and without assistive technology. She used the pen in her testing and did far better with it’s use then without. We were able to revise her IEP and she is being moved into the inclusion classroom with technology supports and had the pens use written in to her IEP as well. She was moved back in to AP geography too. This is a huge win for my daughter. I’m so greatful that the pen worked well for her. The pen might not scan the text perfectly every time, but it does what it is intended to do. The blue tooth is nice because she can use it with her wireless ear buds discreetly and still hear what is going on in class, with just one ear buds in. It seems to hold a charge for a long time. I think it’s a great tool for people who have reading difficulties. I wish I would have gotten it for her sooner. She says it helps a lot and makes it easier to keep up and fully understand text when she needs to read. It might be a bit expensive but I think it’s definitely worth a shot of any child struggling with learning differences when it comes to to reading.
