I read about maca powder, an adaptogen, and wanted to try it. This Healthworks product is great quality: raw, wild, organic maca powder. The powder has a butterscoth-like flavor and goes well in smoothies but a little could be added to many foods such as oatmeal, cookies, cereal, and soups. It is high in nutrients including protein, fiber, Vitamins B, C, fatty acids, amino acids, iodine, etc. Known to produce energy and as a mood stabilizer. I like to use it one week on and then one week off (a tsp or less in my smoothie - start slowly) and feel much more energetic. It is said if you use it continuously, your body gets used to it and it doesn't work as well. People with thyroid conditions are advised to use cautiously, as it contains iodine, but I find that helps me feel better as many foods are iodine deficient. Supposed good for menopause, hot flashes, increasing libido (in men). I can't attest to any of that, but it definitely makes me feel more energetic (and I have suffered from low thyroid all my life with little success from medications).

Maca is a relatively unknown health product compared to say, spirulina. I have read that Maca stimulates the sex drive in both men, and women, acting as an aphrodisiac because of it's hormone regulating properties. And there have been some small scale clinical studies backing up these findings. Maca is a root grown in South America. It is a super food. It has a long shelf life of at least a year. When I take it I notice measurable effects that I think are impossible to chalk up to the placebo effect. I'm a 30 yr old male. If you mix it with water only, it will taste similar to a rotten, slightly sweet turnip. If you mix it with spirulina it is almost undrinkable. If you mix it with protein powder like brown rice protien, it is palatable. If you mix it with fruit juice it is horrid, but if you mix it in a thick fruit smoothy it is sufficiently diluted. It mixes well with tomato juice. At first it repels water and clumps, like spirulina or protein powders do, so a submersible hand blender is nice. Drinking clumps of this stuff in water can seriously trigger a gag reflex. Anyone who calls this stuff yummy must be holding their nose. I've given this to people who spit it out after a sip. It's no walk in the park, it's for the select few who value their health above all else, the people who skip the shot of wheat grass in favor of the shot of thick spirulina.. and spirulina is sweet compared to maca by the way. But the effects are noticeable, and it's natural, and it's a vegetable that has antioxidant properties not found in many plants, so in my opinion it is worth it. This is taken directly from wikipedia on their maca entry, and there they individually site these study findings: Small-scale clinical trials performed in men have shown that maca extracts can heighten libido and improve semen quality. A small double-blind, randomized, parallel group dose-finding pilot study has shown that Maca root may alleviate SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction. Maca does not affect sex hormone levels in humans, and has not been shown to act on hormones directly. It has been presumed that maca's effects may be due to the root's unique nutritional profile, which provides optimum levels of nutrients utilized by the body's endocrine system. In addition, maca has been shown to increase mating behavior in male mice and rats. A recent review states "Randomized clinical trials have shown that maca has favorable effects on energy and mood, may decrease anxiety and improve sexual desire. Maca has also been shown to improve sperm production, sperm motility, and semen volume.

I have been adding one tablespoon of this maca powder to my fertility smoothies every morning for the last 3.5 weeks. However, the first week I noticed that I was gaining weight (not due to diet change) so I did some more research on maca powder and realized that a lot of people have a hard time digesting the starch in the raw maca powder and Peruvians don't eat it raw they bake and cook with it. I should have gotten the gelatinized maca powder but I found that if I just baked my powder in the oven at 300 degrees for about 30-45 minutes that solved my problem of the bloating and gaining weight. I recommend buying the raw if you are going to cook/bake with it but if you are just eating it as is get the organic gelatinized powder. I am 41 and am trying to conceive but my hormones are unbalanced so I started the maca powder. I started noticing a difference after 3 days (a small difference to start). After just 2 weeks ... I had a normal menstrual cycle at my normal 28 days instead of 24 days (it started getting shorter a couple months ago) and it was normal flow (it had gotten very light). I didn't have any PMS symptoms like I use to!!!!! My moods are stable .... I am always calm and even something that may bother me doesn't bother me so much. I am stress free. I have noticed a big difference with my mental sharpness as well. With my hormones changing I noticed my brain was a bit sluggish - I am in college and wasn't too into studying but now I have started a new school year and I actually enjoy reading and studying and retain what I am learning. I wasn't taking it for weight loss but because of my hormones unbalanced I had gained weight around my stomach area due to this and my eating healthy and exercising wasn't helping to lose it. This week .... I started noticing that the fat on my stomach has been reduced 2-3 inches. This is due to my hormones being balanced due to the maca powder. I have stopped drinking coffee because the maca powder has helped with my energy level. I have also added two teaspoons of Hawaiian organic spirulina to my smoothies as well. From reading people suggest starting out slowly adding it to your diet but I just jumped right in with one tablespoon.
