Fantastic Ballpoint, deserves a try!
Seems silly to write a review about just a simple pen, but this is the type of pen that deserves it. Classical styling, superb function, wonderful colors. The ballpoint action is smooth writing and has never given me a problem, over multiple surfaces and temperature ranges. The grip is like a standard pencil from grade school and the weight is well balanced. The spring action is smooth, with just enough weight. If you are looking to step-up your writing game, without breaking the bank, buy this pen. I've already purchased several for myself and as gifts.

a pen for those who think before they write
This pen is a great combination of smooth writing and great feel in hand. I initially found the Caran D'ache pen in a stationary store while looking to replace a cheap broad tipped ball point pen that I loved. While most people look for fine tip writing pens, I love wide writing ones. They are hard to find. The Caran D'ache pen wrote wonderfully smooth and broadly. I used it for years and one day it was gone. I bought several on Amazon so I would have one wherever I went. They are expensive as everyday ballpoint pens go, and will not get the attention of a Cross, Mt Blanc or Waterman. However, they are solid metal, durable pens with a great rolling feel and a uniquely subtle click mechanism. They are a tool of expression for those who use their hand to reveal themselves.

Love this pen!
My husband is a pen collector and an EDC enthusiast - I borrowed his pen like this while on a work meeting on Teams and I really liked how it felt in my hand. I prefer blue ink and adore bright yellow so I was thrilled with this version offering both!

No Drag and Perfect Weight
As a collector of pens I am very impressed. This is my new everyday pen. I give it 4 stars because the refills are as expensive. This pen writes very smoothly with no drag. The 849 is aluminum and weighted perfectly. I would have given it 5 stars if the refills were not in the $8-$10 price range for one. However the pen is rated for approximately 600 pages of writing. They do not say the what size of the paper/ pages are. I purchased a second pen to stay in my purse. Its size is great for pockets. I have added 2 more pens to my Amazon Wish list as I find myself looking for it, bypassing my Watermans! I especially like the bright colors which also makes them easy to find when you’re 70!

Premium price for not-so-premium pen
Wanted to love this pen - really nice color and good size. But the ink just doesn't write as well as Fisher or Pilot, and the refill is an odd size so I think (correct me if I'm wrong) you can only ever use the Caran D'ache refill. More than that, the barrel is paper thin and feels more like plastic than metal. The click mechanism is plastic, and in my experience plastic just doesn't hold up as well as brass or steel. In short, I feel Pilot and Fisher pens represent a much better value for the money.

love these pens!
I love these pens! I like that this one is green on the outside. Be sure to look at ink color and shell color so you know the ink color you're getting. I really like the way it writes!

Very favorite pen, even among high-end writing instruments.
Ink flows and comfortable to hold. Perhaps not for larger hands, as I've read in other reviews, but for my hand (female), it's ideal (slightly shorter than usual pen) and compares to finer, high-end writing instruments. Quite a relative bargain (depending on color you choose) for the quality.

Aluminum?
It’s heavy but feels like plastic. It’s not a well balanced pen. It’s shorter than an average pen which can be an advantage when carrying small a notebook with you, but all the weight is at the top of the pen and falls back into the hand. I find myself gripping it too tightly trying to “hold” it up off my hand. Also, depressing the top to extend the nib offers no click at all. This feels odd. A solid click usually lets us know the nib is locked into place and ready to write with. The nib itself doesn’t extend as far out as the usual pen does. Everything about this pen is different and odd. I suppose if you want something out of the ordinary, this is it. I was hoping to be thrilled with this one but I guess I’ll reach for a higher priced option in a different brand if I can’t come to be comfortable with this one.

I'm new to Caran d'Ache so wasn't sure whether to believe the reviews or not, before I bought one. So my take is as a fan of many different brands of pens, but this is my first CD. It is superbly well-made. Just a simple metal hexagonal shaft with cone point, click-less actuator button and well-sprung pocket clip. The natural place for your fingers to grasp the pen is above the cone section, so firmly on the hexagonal body. Perfect. Some reviewers have complained about the length of the pen but I don't have a problem and find the overall balance, because of the shortness compared with some other offerings, to be fine. I would say I have longish fingers, but not overly thick. Ink quality seems very smooth, though not markedly better than other premium brands. Still very good. Only time will tell if it develops any leaks or rough spots. The pen colour I chose was the vibrant yellow. Prices seem to vary from colour to colour. I like the one I picked. It's easy to spot! As an aside I did wonder how on earth they get the tight pocket-clip on the shaft without scratching the excellent finish. Probably a bit "premium" price-wise but you really can't complain if you decide to buy one. This isn't a cheap imitation or copy of some other brand's work. It is well engineered but to the “less-is-more” ideal. Recommended if you want more than a simple throw-away biro, that's a little "different".
