Great pen. Cool color.
My pens tend to disappear. I've decided to tackle the situation by getting some relatively unique patterns and colors so they stand out. Problem solves. The 849 is available through Amazon and other sources in some great colors and prints. I like this pen so much I have 4 or 5 of them. The ink flow is not quite as easy as let's say a Uniball but the ink is consistent, it doesn't leak or pool, you can write just as easily on an airplane as on the ground. I use the pen daily and have yet to need a new cartridge. My favorite part about the pen is the heft, it's metal and it feels substantial on your hand. People who have borrowed it immediately ask where I got it. The only con is cost, the pen itself is reasonable and the supplier was great but the refills (that I have yet to need) are not cheap.

Love these pens...
I have 2 vintage versions of these pens/brand and always loved them. Their ballpoint cartridges were so smoothly. My husband kept stealing my pens so I bought him this one and he loves it.

I Love these Pens
I have purchased 9 of these Pens in total. This one was for my brother and I got it on Amazon because my normal supplier did not have it in this stunning orange color. It matches the North Face Base Camp luggage I got him perfectly. Anyhow, about the pen - what can I say? for the price, I haven't ever used a writing utensil that could beat it. Writes smooth, great size for EDC and has a great quality weight to it without feeling heavy. I would recommend this pen to absolutely anybody! bu check out Kaufmann Mercantile if you're considering purchasing one. That is where 8 of the 9 i got were purchased from - and they sell the pencils and refills for this pen too.

WOW - this pen is BRIGHT ORANGE!
It is hard to put into words just how bright the flourescent orange color of this pwn is. Caran d'Ache pulled out the stops on the color of this pen. It is totally inappropriate in a conservative business setting. I love it!

No frill and very attractive - Swiss craftsmanship at an affordable price.
The pen is very attractive and distinctive. I bought one in bright orange. It has a very simple, functional design. . Note that this pen does not come with a storage box or instructions. You are only buying and getting the pen making the price of this pen from the seller attractive. The seller can make this more clear. Instructions on how to care for this pen and replace the ballpoint pen would be useful. But I did a Google search for Caran D'Ache 849 instructions did not bring up anything from the manufacturer, so it may not exist? . The pen is constructed very well with simple precision and few moving parts. Maintenance is simple - you screw off the push-top knob with the ballpoint pen tip retracted and insert the ballpoint refill and screw back on the know while applying pressure down. The spring housed in the tip of the pen does not come out which is a good thing, because you do not want to lose that spring. . Craftsmanship is Swiss superior. The aluminum body is machined well and smooth. The paint is very smoothly, thickly applied without any blemishes. The knob and clip are machined and polished well as well. And the pen feels very solid in your hand and while this pen is not heavy at all, it does not feel flimsy or disposable. . I have four complaints though: 1 - The clip comes apart easily from the pen. It is not well attached and should not slide off, but it does. The clip has a tiny hole which is supposed to grip against a tiny bump on the pen body holding it in place, but it is not satisfactory and the clip moves. 2 - The ballpoint pen tip can protrude out a little bit more when in use. But the tip only protrudes out only ever so slightly making the user feel as though there may be a defect with the tip not coming out completely. 3 - Underneath the clip that I complained slid off too easily, you have CARAN D'ACHE etched in black onto the body of the pen which is hidden from view. I bought this pen, because it is CARAN D'ACHE. The logo or name should be proudly visible. 4 - Include instructions. But do they even exist? Read above - I googled for instructions and could not find any from the manufacturer.

So, I'd used this pen prior to buying it so I guess it's kind of cheating to say I'd known I'd love it this whole time? Regardless, this pen is brilliant, has that deliciously soft, blue colour and glides greatly against both my Clairfontaine paper as well as regular, low quality school paper. The ink rolled out much nicer than I'd remembered ballpoints to do so, and was generally a pleasurable writing experience that I have to say, I had the honour of having. I had become a fountain pen snob for a year or so and after having borrowed this pen for an exam and a lesson or two, I had fallen in love with it. The size is pretty small but it feels somewhat nicely weighted somehow and the "Swiss Made" imprint really helps to drive the point that you're paying for quality in a fun and small package, brightly coloured and different to everyone else's pens, this is definitely one I won't be lending out! To anyone doubting the smoothness of this pen, I've bought a Pilot Metropolitan, which has to be the smoothest fountain pen I've ever used and a Waterman Carene, synonymous with gliding across the page, this pen is on par with those in terms of smoothness and how pleasurable the experience is! I'd love for there to be a full sized version of the pen to fit the larger size of my hand but I'm fine with using the smaller, more compact and cute size.
