Radius Garden Root Slayer Round Head Shovel XL

I needed to dig 6-18" deep sono-tube holes for deck footings and I live in Jacksonville, FL, where you will find horizontal-running roots ranging from tiny to 3' thick everywhere under the surface dirt. The soil is sandy clay and this shovel cuts right thru the soil and right thru most of the small roots. Where it wouldn't cut thru on it's own weight, an assist jump on the top sliced right thru everything in my way. It cost a bit more than renting a post hole digger but then I can use this whenever I need to now, and there will be more opportunities. Great product, solid build and good weight balance between lifting and puncture.

This shovel is heavy duty. The shovel is really well made and the design of the front end is great for cutting into the dirt. Where it shines though is when you hit roots. It has a good fold at the upper edge of the shovel so your foot doesn't slip and you can really apply lots of down force on it to chop right through roots. It's design also sort of keeps it digging where you want it to dig regardless of what you hit. The 'mouth' on the tip of the shovel just eats right through the roots instead of glancing off to one side. Wish I had this shovel much sooner and now I own three.

I am a hardcore gardener that has been working hard transforming a heavily wooded lot into a lawn free yard filled with thousands of perennials, shrubs and ornamental trees so I need good working tools. I wanted a heavy duty shovel that could get through hard clay, rocky soil and random old, thick roots. I like the shape of the shorter shovel, but I wanted a longer handle so I got this one that has the cut out at the top of the shovel and serrated edges. I’m not sure I like that cut out as much as a sharp single point to get the shovel into the ground, but it gets the job done. The shovel head is thick and sturdy, and heavy. I do like that. That being said, the heavy head and the heavy long handle does make this shovel quite heavier than most other shovels I’ve used. If you don’t have a lot of upper body strength, be aware that this will feel like a work out. Overall this is a good quality tool, and I would buy more from this brand.

I have owned many shovels in my time and the Root Slayer is in a class all its own! I have finally found the shovel i've been needing for 20 years! If you want badass, you got it. First, it's heavy. Man heavy. "Just right heavy" due to the solid steel head and neck. It cuts through 1" roots like butter. It's length allows me to stand up straight and deliver a strong blow to any root i encounter. The teeth on the edge clears smaller roots as I dig. And with the heaviness of it, i can dig a hole in half the time. And don't worry about bending the neck it you pry up a large rock -the rock will break before the Root Slayer does. Hats off to a company that knows the meaning of quality and value. I HIGHLY recommend the Root Slayer. Thanks!

Makes shoveling in the yard SO much easier. Cuts through roots really well. I couldn’t believe how well it worked.

Strong and heavy shovel. Serrations didn’t seem to help much. More weight than my 180 pounds would help as world more arm and especially leg strength than I have.

This shovel is very sturdy, heavy weight and gets through roots when transplanting bushes and clearing land much easier than a regular shovel. Definitely recommend!

No matter where you dig a hole in this yard you are going to hit a root or rock. Finally a shovel that takes some if the frustration out of a simple job. Well made, not a flimsy shovel ! Highly recommend it is well worth the price.
