It works, great customer service. And that works for me! - Please see updates
We have lived 20 years in bear country. I have tried multiple options, including a "bear proof" bin supplied by our waste management company. The bear ripped it open in one night! When he broke our garage door to get to the can, I knew I needed to look elsewhere for help. Enter this bear proof trash bin. Thie first night, the bear batted it all around, but couldn't get in. Chaining the can down is a must. About a month after buying the can, the mechanism quit working. I thought, great, another good idea that loses out to Ursa Major. I called the company and received immediate help. Turns out it just needed a little WD40 and it works again. Last night the bear turned it completely upside down but couldn't get it. I can finally sleep soundly, not worrying or getting up to chase the bear away. I love this can!2017 Update - I am very sad that my can has not stood the test of time. Please see the review just above by mtnpeep. Their experience with the can is the same as mine. The metal rim around the top is irreparably bent, and there is a hole just above one of the wheels. Very sad. Luckily the bears are hibernating right now while I figure out whether to get another Toter or some other option.2018 Update - I got another Toter can after 2017 update above. Now see the attached picture. This may just be trash hauler abuse, but went out to the road to get the can and the photo shows how the metal rim has been bent. First bear of the year last night and trash all over. Gonna try again, but I think I'll eventually just need to build a bear proof enclosure.

well made, nondescript
This garbage can is very well made and should last a long time. The locking latch is user replaceable if need be down the road if it gets broken, but the C ring that the latch locks onto is riveted on and not easily replaceable, so hopefully that will hold out well.If I never come back to update this review otherwise, you can assume that we haven't had any more trouble with garbage break-ins by the mother black bear and her cubs that live near us.It is hard to believe Amazon shipped this thing half-way across the country to us for free. It came completely assembled, all we had to do was roll it out of the box and it was good to go.The locking mechanism is easy enough to use; my 5 year old daughter has no trouble. The latch can also lock in the open position by easily just pushing on the mechanism from the inside - this is perfect for garbage days so that we don't have to pay extra to have the garbage man manually come out and unlock it. The lid sits normally in this mode, looking like it is locked but the lid is free to open wit the automated garbage trucks. The can itself looks essentially like any other 96 gallon garbage can, except for a band of black metal around the edge and the round pipe sticking up at the front - it is really pretty non-descript and most neighbors will likely never notice it. We got the blackstone model - completely black, and it is nice looking for a garbage can. The picture Amazon had on the item page showed it was green, but the description stated Blackstone so we weren't sure what would show up. Luckily it was the black one as described. The pipe sticking out was also black and not the silver pictured. Everything blends well.Anyhow, great garbage can if you have black bear or raccoon problems. Not sure if it would hold up to a Grizzly but it wouldn't surprise me.UPDATE May 2014: can is still going strong. The black paint is chipping off the metal band, but overall the can has held up great and we have been very pleased.

Looks subsantial... we'll see.
The box was nearly destroyed when they delivered it and the bin was upside down inside the box resulting in the top of the bin being all scratched and marred up from banging around in the trucks. It would've been nice if they'd have put "THIS SIDE UP!" on the box and made the box substantial enough to hold up in shipping or at least put some packing around the can. I think they just opened the back of the truck, dumped it out and left. Fortunately the bin is very heavy duty and stood up to FED EX banging it around a lot!I built a 2 x 6 "box" for this to sit inside (like you see at State Parks) and screwed the "box" to the deck. The bear cannot get in, nor can he knock it over or push it around. The "box" has hinges on the front so I can open it and wheel the cart out, if need be. I also added a "Tee" handle on the top of the container by drilling a hole in the plastic plug on the top of the handle and putting a 3/8" stainless steel bolt with a nut and washer on each side of the plastic plug, then screwed the "Tee" handle to the top of the bolt. MUCH easier to lift the door by the Tee handle. We'll see how well it stands up to the bears and I'll report back if it fails.

Black bear demotivator
Just in time for the fall rummage sale on garbage! Stood up to a hungry momma and a young male. First night he dragged it a couple hundred yards before giving up, then maybe a hundred yards, then 10, none, and then never came back! Few nights later my neighbor starts firing off shotgun shells like it’s 4th of July! Mission accomplished. Wish the locking mechanism was better shielded from snow and ice, but it gets the job done.

Bear tested but latch has become a bit finicky.
So I've had this for a little over a month. It has been bear tested and it was successful in keeping the bear out of the garbage. Point for garbage can! Just make sure you chain it to something or the bear will drag it off somewhere to spend more meaningful time with it.However, the top latch has become a little finicky. Now you need to ensure the latch is locked and closed or else it is brunch time for the bears. I'd wish the latch just always closed when you put the top down instead of every once in a while closed but not fully latched.
