Cheap, lower power, reliable
Got this to replace a Synology, mainly because Synology REALLY want you to use their own branded drives, and constantly nag if you don't. Synology's drives are just Toshibas with a different label, and I'm using Toshiba N300 drives anyway, so.... Loaded the NAS with a 1TB Samsung SSD for the "system" drive (which holds the Emby metadata etc), and 3x12TB Toshiba N300 drives in RAID5. Plugged it in to my Unifi network using a SFP+ DAC cable, and it's been working away happily. Can read/write at about 600MB/s across the network (basically the drives flat out). Upgraded the RAM to 4GB using an old SODIMM out of a dead laptop, works great (came with 2GB, max is 4GB as it's a 32-bit CPU). Only thing to note is, some apps from the community don't work as they need a 64-bit CPU which this doesn't have. Don't expect to be able to run lots of apps. I only run Emby server and some of the QNAP built-in apps, so it works fine for me.

Small and compact 4 Bay Rackmount NAS
I dont have a lot of space in my Comms cabinet so this small rackmount 4 bay NAS was the perfect solution to my needs. I was using a 2 bay desktop NAS but now I can rackmount it along with my other networking kit out the way and still access it quickly over the network. Installed 4 x 4TB Ironwolf drives in it and it is working like a charm. The Qnap software is easy to use and set up. I had my Raid array running in no time and sharing data across all my machines and devices. It does make a little bit of noise but as it is our the way in a closed comms cabinet it is not a problem.

Access files worldwide with little fuss.
I love this NAS. Up and running in 1/2 an hour and along with qFile on my Samsung tablet (and telephone) I can access my files anywhere in the world. I have this rackmount version but any qNAS should give the same functionality.

Great basic business NAS unit - until it died and QNAP want megabucks to fix it.
This is a fantastic basic business NAS. I use it to back up my 9-bay 977x over a 10GbE DAC cable. I’ve got 4 12Tb drives in it and because it’s short depth it will easily fit into a comms cabinet. It’s cheap for what you get and it’s plenty fast enough for a backup device. No, it won’t transcode for Plex but that’s clearly not the market it’s aimed at. It’s also very low power and pretty quiet so it’s environmental impact in the office is also very good. [edit]The back plane failed and it said some disks were missing (they weren’t). Amazon didn’t want to know - according to them it was QNAP’s problem - and QNAP don’t recognise UK/EU legislation so they charge US$320 to repair/replace. Looking on the QNAP forums backplane failure is common on these NAS devices[/edit]

19" Rackformat ideal.
