Science of Creature Design: understanding animal anatomy

Wow....if you're looking to draw, paint, invent creatures.....this book is for you. She has tips and information. Many creatures (current wildlife of this world, ancient mammals, dinosaurs, fantasy animals) are shown with their skeleton, musculature, and in different poses. Author is one of the people who put together creatures for Star Wars, among other movies, so she does this professionally. And the drawings are fabulous!

Very Imaginative Anatomy and Designs! I really enjoyed reading this! It was a fun and amazing read/flip through. The art was great and I enjoyed seeing the artist's process and sketches and concepts finalized into imaginative and inspirating designs! Learned some new techniques myself. Epic read!

This book is awesome. Seriously awesome. If you're looking for an animal anatomy reference this is the book. She goes over every different animal anatomy genre and even imagined animals to give an idea of how to create your own with realistic structure. Awesome illustrations, orthopedics and even different angles and a few simplified forms. Basically you need it on your shelf. NOTE: This is a book that accompanies other basic anatomy books or for someone with a decent understanding of anatomy already. I'd reccomend Stephen Peck's book as a great beginner book and Proko.com if you're just beginning on anatomy, you'll be killing it in no time.

I love designing creatures, and this book has SO MUCH detail on a wide variety of animals. If you need to reference how to design something, this is a MUST HAVE in your collection. The series of animals covered, in great detail (Skin, Mucle, & Bone) are as follows; Gorilla, Thylacosmilus, Long-Tailed Pangolin, Giant Pangolin, Ethiopian Wolf, Spectacled Bear, Giant Short-Faced Bear, Hyena, Leopard, Spotted Cheetah, Andrewsarchus, Eland, Sivatherium, Red Scorpionfish, Hellbender, Blue-Footed Booby, Andalusian Horse, Rhamphorhynchus, Kannemeyeria, Oviraptor Philoceraptops, Protoceratops, Styracosaurus, Parasaurolophus, & Pinacosaurus. The Artist also includes simplified sketches of other animals too; Domestic Dog (Labrador), Domestic Cat (Calico), Goat, Elephant, Comet Goldfish, Carolina Anole, Budgerigar, & Camarasaurus. There are even MORE animals, but I won't list since they aren't as fully detailed and covered. And of course, she includes how she designs her own creatures framework from bone, muscle, and skin.

-1 star and returned. HERES WHY! This is a great book, shows animals, dinasoars, a select few examples of mixed looking creatures and specific steps and considerations in creating them. BUT THERE WAS ONE MAIN THING MISSING THAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. Imaginary design. For example: the brainstorming behind ... well, Pokémon, or final fantasy creatures. The different characteristics of ... say... dragons from Asia and Europe and how they differ based on those specific characteristics, or anatomy. Taking the anatomy of a lizard or a wolf and combining that with the design of a unique dragon of your own and like design methods. Using anatomy as a basis for creating zombie creatures. And LOTs more visual examples of figures, characteristics, figure drawing methods, combinations, muscular structures functioning and how that affects appearance. The creative design part is what I wanted... and what I didn’t get to my satisfaction in this book. I received it today and decided to return it today... it’s still a good book, but could be more precise in its description and title. And would be 10x better if it included everything I have listed here... because that how much further they could have taken it as a creature design book.

Wie der Titel des Buchen sagt geht es hier ums Verstehen und nicht direkt ums Zeichnen. Das Buch erklärt auf hohen Niveau weshalb es wichtig ist verschiedene Tierarten zunächst zu verstehen, bevor man eigene Kreaturen entwirft. Kurzgefasst geht es um die Funktionen der verschiedenen Gliedmaßen und die EIgenarten des Körperbaus. Wer diese studiert und versteht kann Kreaturen/Monster/Lebewesen erschaffen, die lebendig und glaubwürdig wirken, da ihre Anatomie theoretisch funktionieren würde. Dafür geht das Buch verschiedene Tierarten durch (auch ausgestorbene Lebewesen) und weißt auf Besonderheiten in der Anatomie hin. Das Ganze ist versehen mit Skelettzeichnungen, einem kleinen Beschreibungstext und einer fertig Zeichnung des Tieres. Gemeinsam mit einem Praxisbuch (in dem man lernt wie man Formen erfasst und Tiere zeichnen kann) stellt das Buch einen wunderbaren Startpunkt dar. Wer nach einer Anleitung sucht wie man tatsächlich Schritt für Schritt Kreaturen entwirft wird sich hier nicht abgeholt fühlen und sollte zu einem anderen Buch greifen.

As ilustrações são magníficas. São apresentadas ilustrações de animais viventes, fósseis e imaginários em diversas posições. A apresentação de várias espécies permite comparações que facilitam a compreensão da anatomia. Ótimo livro a quem se interessa pela osteologia e miologia com finalidades artísticas.

É um livro excelente em tudo. Desde a composição gráfica, à qualidade do papel e à impressão, que é o que nos salta à vista, vêm logo de seguida os conteúdos, muito bem organizados e sustentados pelo conhecimento da anatomia animal. Apresenta ajuda na criação credível de animais fantásticos, a partir da sua estrutura interna, o esqueleto. Vale a pena comprar, embora não seja barato.
