Close to fundamentalist propaganda
I bought this for my daughter who'd shown an interest in philosophy and the rules of argument. Having had a quick look inside, I thought it would be just the thing for her. But there are some big problems. In particular the book is very much a product of its culture, which seems to be the Deep South of the USA. Many of the examples won't make sense out of this context. Also there are contradictions in the treatment of the Bible (which is referred to too often). At one stage the young reader is advised believing something just because someone else told you is foolish, but elsewhere an exercise asks the reader to evaluate reasons why murder is wrong. Apparently "because the bible says so" is a good reason. There is similiarly disturbing discussion of creationism, abortion and so on. I have no problem with people who believe in creationism or who want to follow the tenets of their own religion, but I have a big problem with people who want to undermine other people's powers of reason by providing what strikes me as distorted propaganda under the guise of a "thinking toolbox". This is the opposite, I am afraid and more like a Sunday School textbook. I was fooled into buying this book. I am shocked that the real nature of the book is not made clear.
