Azumanga Daioh : Azuma, Kiyohiko, Azuma, Kiyohiko: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Absolutely Superb Manga - Having really enjoyed the anime series, I figured I should probably get the manga, and when I saw the omnibus edition being re-released, I didn't have any hesitations buying it. Firstly, I'll say that the release date on this page is wrong. It was released December '09, not February '10. I was pleasantly surprised to have it delivered to me about two months earlier than I was expecting to have it. Secondly, I'll say that there's a lot more book than I was expecting for the price. I know it's an omnibus and 600 pages, but I wasn't quite expecting it to be as chunky as it was. Given the standard price of manga volumes, this is very good value for money in terms of quantity. It's also excellent value for money in terms of quality. It's just as funny, if not more so, than the TV series. The characters are portrayed really well, and Azuma does a great job of bringing the reader into the manga and connecting the reader emotionally with the characters. As with his Yotsuba&! series, it's extremely funny, and it's a really great book to have for a little bit of light-hearted humour every day. You can really just open it at a random page, read for a a few minutes, and find yourself laughing out loud and in a good mood for the next few hours. Must-buy for anyone who enjoys the anime series and doesn't already own the manga, and I'd strongly recommend it to anyone who wants a bit of humour and isn't put off by the cutesy appearance, because this is definitely funny for adults and not aimed at children. Review: Funny, and well worth a read! - If you know what Azumanga Daioh is then you'll love this collection of the manga strips in one big book. If you don't, then this is a perfect opportunity to acquaint yourself with this great comedic series! It is a high school comedy but don't let the setting put you off (or worry about them being schoolgirls, this isn't that sort of manga - in fact it even pokes fun at that stereotype) the characters are fantastic, its very funny and you do get to feel as though you know these girls as real people over time. There isn't really plot per se, its more that you see them start school and go though school and leave school - but that's not the point, merely the setting. It's the way different personalities are brought together, how scenarios are played out that provides the focus and comedy. The art is set up as a series of four panel (mostly) comic strips, like Peanuts or Garfield and while a joke may extend into two or more strips usually its just the one. Unlike the two just mentioned though every strip builds the characters further and advances them and their lives (so yes, occasionally events from past strips are referred to) and just when you think a character has it the limit of where a particular joke goes, Azuma manages to subvert it beautifully so it becomes a new fresh angle and not just a one-note character. It might not hit the ground running straight from the first strip but by the time you've read a few and allowed the characters to be introduced gradually it does pick up pace and get a lot funnier. From then on, you'll be hooked!

A must for any manga fan
I've been eyeing this book for a while but life and money kept getting in the way but now I've saved up and bought it the long wait was worth it. It's a really good read, very funny and a must have for any manga fan! I highly recommend it

Most Charming Manga of all time? I think so!
When this arrived, I cursed myself. I'd made a mistake and ordered the wrong thing. Why the heck would *I* want to read cutesy stories about a class of schoolgirls??? Five minutes later I was laughing out loud and blessing whatever gods or goddesses of mischance had sent this wonderful book in my direction. The format is a bit unlike the usual manga layout - mostly this book takes the form of a series of little 4-frame strips (Just like Peanuts). Initially I thought this was going to be much too limiting, but it really isn't. While most of the 4-panel strips are self-contained, they also sometimes flow together into longer overall stories. In terms of 'story', this isn't the kind of thing I would ever usually read - nothing supernatural, no violence, not much risqué stuff! - but these characters are just so lovable that they won me over. As I worked my way through this (huge) volume, I really never wanted it to end. I'm already looking forward to reading it all again and getting to know the girls even better. Beyond any shadow of doubt, the most enjoyable and engaging manga I've yet read. Oh, and you should also hunt out the DVD series, which I've now seen. Great fun!!

Hilarious and heartwarming
What can one say. This is the collected Azumanga Daioh, in a recent translation (not the ADV version) and is a thick bound paperback that doesn't seem to be showing signs of disintegration (which in an ex library copy like the one I got means well bound!) The anime is damned hard to get, but the manga is easily as funny. The overall plot if there is one is that of 6 girls going through 3 years of Japanese High School. What they do, what they experience, growing pains and their interaction at the hands of three teachers, the immature one, the shy and quiet one (PE) and the downright creepy male one with the stunning wiefu and daughter. You can dip into it anywhere, or you can read it through. There are cultural explanation pages and I found it extremely funny and heartwarming by degrees. We know people like this. Also if you can, get the animation.

......
Arrived with a few small scuffs and dirt on spine, slight dirt marks on back and front of book too.

Five Stars
Very funny and enjoyable. This collected edition is good value for money and is more manageable than individual Manga.

Whimsical
A heartwarming group of characters going through high school, from beginning to end. Comic strip style rather than necessarily one consistent flowing story can take some getting used to but there's a definite flow through the book.

I love Azumanga Daioh as a whole and got into it early last year. I didn’t know they sold the whole series on here so I bought it, surprisingly came super quick; in the span of a day. The cover was a bit messed up as shown in the first picture, however the rest of the book is in mint condition. I love this series and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone wanting to get into manga/anime, a 10/10 series.
