Yes, you can, but the pricing on these tools and batteries are baffling. I bought a string trimmer with this battery and charger for $179. In other words, you could buy the string trimmer with the battery and charger, throw the string trimmer in the trash, and save $90. Similarly, the battery alone is $169, just $10 less than the string trimmer, battery and charger combo. It makes no sense.

How do I know when the battery is fully charged

The fan inside the charger unit will turn off. Thats the best confirmation. Pushing the LED button - it will turn green even if your down to 10% so the charger function is the best way.

Can you leave the battery on the charger once it's fully charged?

I can only speak from my experience with the product. I have left the battery on the charger fully charged for days with no ill effect.
