Los Angeles: Portrait of a City

After living in Los Angeles for over 30 years I thought I knew pretty much about the city. This book presents an excitement to the reader to learn more about the city. The collection of photographs and commentaries have been researched thoroughly. They Are presented in a chronological manner depicting the historic growth and expansion from historic archives and more. I was surprised at the extensive collection of maps and photographs in the book, some I have seen before but this is a great collection and to my mind is one of the best to date and properly represents the story of Los Angeles. Great visuals, an excellent book for anyone who want to know about my city or wants to look through the eyes of the photographer and see the city grow. Would recommend this to anyone.

This book is great value for money, very informative and fabulous photos. I bought this book as I've always had an interest in old Hollywood and Los Angeles in general, and this ticked all the boxes. I'm looking to get the London and New York one next. Would highly recommend it.

A huge coffee table picture book which most superbly details the rich and intricate history of one of the most incredible city’s on Earth. Personally I love Los Angeles and every time I pick up this book it just reminds me why. Well worth the £45 price tag

It's an amazing book and I'm glad I listened to those who recommended buying the proper, big version. It's really big, like a proper photo album and there is real magic in those images. To be able to see, for example, what the city looked like at the very beginning is kind of strange and almost unbelievable, but those images capture it and transport you back in time. You don't just look at them, you study them. I wanted to give it five stars but I feel like I would've liked more description with every picture. Most of the time you get a couple of lines explaining what you're looking at but there's always something missing that prevents you to truly understand what's going on. I guess that if you want to know more you can always google it but I wish I didn't have to do it. This book on its own should be able to tell a cohesive story, without me having to resort to other sources to find out what I'm looking at and put it in context. Other than that, it's one of those books everyone should have.

informative (dreisprachige) Texte, jede Menge Fotos sowie Karten und gezeichnete Stadtpanoramen. Ich werde noch lange Freude an diesem Buch haben, welches den Weg von Los Angeles von der abgelegenen Agrar-Kommune zur Weltstadt nachzeichnet. Hab schon manche Stunde in diesm Buch geschmökert, oftmals eine Lupe zuhilfe genommen, um noch die kleinsten Details in den Stadtplänen zu erkennen. Ich begeistere mich dafür, einzelne Straßenszenen des Jahres 1890 aus diesem Buch mit der aktuellen Street View Ansicht zu vergleichen, über die Anfänge der Filmindustrie in der Stadt zu lesen, zu sehen, wie die Stadt zur Automobil-Metropole wurde...

Vraiment Taschen est une des maison d'édition qui s'arrache toujours pour fournir un travail de qualité. Les photos sont somptueuses et la période de l'âge d'or de LA (40s-60s) est très largement couverte.
