I worked as a kindergarten ed. assistant for four years and I can testify that Ms. Diamond's book, "Welcome to the Aquarium," honestly reflects what happens in that first year of elementary education. It's all there: the routines, the frustrations, the socialization (or lack of), the formalized exposure to skills that will enable them as adults, and of course, the love and joy that will usually prevail when you are surrounded by a group of joyful, squirming, vibrant five year olds.

Julie Diamond thinks about children and their development in an inspiring way. After reading this book I've changed several practices in my classroom to help children become more in touch with their feelings and build community. I recommend this book to new and seasoned teachers and re-read it every few years. I am indebted to Julie Diamond for her observations, encouragement of children, anecdotes, and wisdom.
