This is the Best Gate spring yet I have fitted. Being in the construction industry I have fitted lots of different types of gate springs. Usually broken after short period. This spring being stainless is made to last. I cannot figure out why some buyers are having problems. It maybe they have not got it in the correct position, and applying too much tension, therefore the bottom nut is coming loose. Also if the door or gate is very heavy or stiff normally, the chances are it will need a lot more turns on the tension nut to strengthen it. This is why it is slackening at the bottom. Two flat steel locking spacers should be supplied to rectify this.

Fitted the spring to a new gate and it looks great. You need to be very careful tensioning the spring if using a wrench as you have to fit a straight edged wedge between the tensioning nut and the fixing plate to lock the tension setting. Mine came with only one of these wedges and I reckon you need two. The second one to wedge the bottom retaining nut as well. I made a second one myself.

Impossible to put tension on this spring. The bottom part isn't fixed and turns in the bracket when turning the top. And despite e-mailing the supplier never got answer. Don't buy this product and avoid the Hill Group

Botton nut turns because tolerance too large. Had to add thin space bar between nut and body to stop turning.

doesn't work as well as one would hope, tightening it doesn't seem to help ensure the gate closes....works ok, but not a failsafe gate shutting device as one would hope

This is so much nicer than the ubiquitous black ones. it comes with a shim to hold the pre-load once you set it. However mine needed one on the other end to keep that hex from turning in the bracket too. Maybe mine was misassembled, but a little 1/8x1/4x1" block fixed mine. you could easily wedge a #8 nut in there instead, it's underneath so it doesn't show.
