This book gives agency to children and assumes they are intelligent.
FULL DISCLOSURE! I am a children’s book author and the illustrator of this book illustrated one of my books. That’s how I found this book.So I wrote a book and the illustrator ended up being Matt Myers. I then looked up his work and found Battle Bunny. This is one of those books with a concept so fun I wish I’d written it. A kid gets a hoaky book and changes it to something awesome! YES! Could I have written it? No. I’m a different author but this was great, and kudos to the authors! But the art?! How did he do it so well? He illustrated two books, one in the old fashioned “Golden Book” style we all are familiar with and one in the illustrations of a small, defiant, talented book vandal! It’s simply brilliant and requires a lot of creativity. This book is great for ANY CHILD! It is a perfect segue to discussions about preferences and creativity. My kids love it! They range in ages from 21-26 but they remember being kids and appreciate reading books with multi-tiered humor now.A great book!

The Battle Is On!
Absolutely love the creativity and imagination that went into this book. I’ve always encouraged my students, and child, to change the ending of the story if they did not like it or just to add imaginative and critical thinking. This story has done just that in an imaginative and exciting way. My child frequently chooses this book as her nighttime read.I also love the companion website that allowed you to print out your own blank Birthday Bunny book to rewrite. My five-year-old took those pages everywhere we went so that she could write her story, Dr. Dooms Bunny.I think this would work well with reluctant/struggling readers/writers in elementary and early middle school.

Definitely not the book if you're looking for nice quiet reading
We first tried to read Battle Bunny in the library, which I do not at all recommend. Make sure this book is only opened when the reader is located in a place where sudden outbursts of uncontrollable laughter are more appropriate.

For kids much older than you would think
I bought this for my students and their reactions were hilarious. Most of them came to show me the book at first thinking someone had "messed it up." At the end of second grade (8 years old), my students struggled with the actual content. It was very hard for them to keep up with what is basically 2 story lines. In order to get the humor, you have to look at each page's "real" story and then see what the authors have done to revise it. Some of the older students understood it, but I think with another year they would all find the book as cute as I did.All in all, I'd say that this is a great book to bring out to show how NOT to care for a book, but primary kids may or may not "get" it past that.

Battle Bunny saves the day!
We received Battle Bunny on the 7th snow day of the school year and the third for the week. Not only is this book brilliant in so many ways, but it filled the house with happy silence while my kids passed it back and forth. The brilliant, creative team led by Jon Scieszka fill each page with spectacular and creative details that encourage re-reading. The kids (6 and 9) laughed out loud and were eager to share their discoveries. It for good reason that it won the Gryphon Award - I look forward to more books that are as accessible to younger readers yet complex enough to keep them interested and engaged.

Fun, Creative, and More for Adults/Older Children
My friend, who teaches 7th grade, uses this book as a teaching tool. She explains how the author took a "traditional" story and flipped it on it's ear for a fun and creative take (though somewhat demented take) on a children's story. She then has her students rewrite classic fairy tales.I bought this book for my 45 year old brother as a gag gift.. I can't help but think that this would have been something he would do to his books as a child! Very fun and creative little book.
