Great coloring book but some of the detail seems hurried
Like this coloring book (best with Gel pens due to intricacy of detail (most of the detail anyway) and 2-sided printing. My only complaint is that it is not detailed enough for the serious student. Many of the knotwork patterns have a "yeah whatever" feel to them as if the were done with crosshatch in a hurry to get the thing done. The knotwork is hard to follow (impossible on some as it is incomplete). I did all my coloring with a side-by-side comparison to the Blance Cirker paperback for accurate color, and some of the knotwork patterns yes were lost to fading but some were not and have that hurried look to them. Overall though, this is really nice. I've included a few examples.

Kells, what can I say! I liked the book, can't wait for the movie.
Seriously, I wish there were more blown up details. I intend to use it for my own illuminations and the pages are at times overwhelming. There said, there are copiers that can enlarge. The wealth of decoration is amazing. And black and white is great for tracing and even just visually copying. The cost and delivery were also great.

Lovely book
I love Dover. I am practing illumination and scribal arts and this is a fun way to practice painting the illumination with drawing.

intricate detailed
I would not recommend this for young kids or some older ones unless they are hard core about detail. The pictures are so detailed and you really feel like your working on the book it self in some small scale, and I think that's the best part.

Beautiful designs but cheap paper
Beautiful designs but cheap paper. The designs are on both sides of the page and ink colors bleed through. Plus the pen picks up fuzz from the paper.

A really nice colouring book. A modern artist has faithfully reproduced the illustration pages within the Book of Kells which allows (those interested) to participate in the painting-or-coloured-pencils-as-meditation exercise. The evangelist symbols (there are two different pages within the original folios) have been split into separate symbols to allow a workable size image on the colouring page. One of the pages also has blown up a partial section of one illustrated page rather than include the full detail. Anybody who has seen the real thing and the breath-taking minuteness of the illustrations (& there was a magnifying glass attached to the glass case of the exhibition I visited) will understand why this was done. 28 detailed pages including the Virgin & child folio, Christ enthroned folio. I was especially pleased as I have found the digitised version of the Book of Kells online but it's over 1200 years old and it is difficult to make out the details even when you zoom in as much as your monitor will allow. Heartily recommended.

Nice artwork in the book which is what I wanted. Thee are notes on the bottom of each page telling the story behind each page. Nice feature.
