Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460. To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.

Update
I'm a little premature with my review however I'll update it if it changes. As everyone else with the one star review reported, the front of the shoe, mostly the left one, is way way way too tight. I just got them in the mail last night and tried them on and was very disappointed but figured that they are pretty enough that I'll try and wear them to see if they break in. So I put them on this morning and the left shoe is quite tight across the top. The right seems to be ok. I'm going to give them time and hopefully they will stretch out. If not then I guess I'll be giving these to my granddaughter who wears a size smaller shoe than me. The rest of the shoe fits great, heel and toe and ankle and all that. Also I was very disappointed that these did not come with the pink ribbon laces that people said it did. It doesn't say that it comes with them in the description but a tiny bit of me was hoping that they did anyway. Even if these shoes do break in correctly I would not order them from here again. The next pair I get will be directly from Dr. Martens that way I know I'm getting the real thing. These are just ok for now..They really are super super cute tho!!! I'll update in a few weeks.I've had these for like a year now I think and they are the absolute BEST boots I've ever worn. I wear them all the time they are just completely broken in and comfortable. When you first get them they hurt like hell but just be patient.. Break them in and they will be well worth the first few months of torture. I get so many compliments on them. I'd definitely buy another pair. Best boots I've ever had!!!!

Comfortable and Beautiful Genuine Dr. Marten's
These are made in Vietnam but don't let that stop you. These are genuine Dr. Marten's. They have an authorized factory in Vietnam. These boots are beautiful. They are very well made and constructed with professionalism and the high standards that you would expect from Dr. Marten. These are fabric not leather. They come with the black shoestrings you see in the picture but you also get some pretty pink ribbon laces, too! These fit me right out of the box. I wear a 7 1/2 US size, so I ordered the 5 UK size. There was not a breaking in period for me as they were comfortable from the get go. I suffer from foot pain especially my heels, so when I wear these boots it is like walking on air. I can not say enough wonderful things about these boots. They are super comfy and really, really cute! I always get positive comments when I wear these boots and you will, too!

Expect EVERYONE to say "I LOVE your boots"!!!
First off, not only do these shoes looks amazing online, but they look even better in real life! To be clear, these are canvas boots, not leather, and I believe the reason they are $80 cheaper than the Soho NYC location is because they are made in Vietnam, not England. That said, I couldn't tell the difference at all - I visited the Soho shop and looked at the boots, and there was no visible difference, except that in the tongue my boots say "made in Vietnam"....big deal.Expect a break-in period. I typically take a US 7.5 or 8, but I decided to buy the US size 7(UK5) because I hear DM's come up big. I almost cried when I received mine, because I thought not only were they too tight length wise, but that the top across my foot was too tight as well. You need to wear them around the house daily for a few days, with socks. Manually flex the boot back, forwards, side-to-side. Stuff paper in them to stretch the front out. As an absolute worse case scenario, you could also take the inner sole out, that will create some extra room. But I think if you are a half size, rounding down is fine, just expect the shoes to hurt.UPDATE:1 month later, shoes fit perfectly fine (after stuffing vigorously with newspaper! I also get comments on them EVERY time I go out - people stop me in the street, in shops, at restaurants, to say how wonderful my shoes are. On average, I get between 1-3 comments from complete strangers each time I wear them.

Different from Description
The description stated the shoes had "leather uppers." I purchased the re-intented Victorian print lace up boots. These boots were all canvas. One fits perfectly the other is too tight over the top of the foot. The other thing I did not like is that because they are canvas they crinkle at the ankle when I walk. This is even when the laces are tied as tightly as possible. I do like the look of the boots and I hope some of the problems correct themselves with continued wear and use.

The perfect girly Docs
I lusted over these boots since they came out in 2011 and finally, FINALLY ordered them. I'm so glad I did and can't wait til the weather cools down so I can actually enjoy wearing them instead of just looking at them in my closet. The print is so cute, they're well constructed, versatile, and should last for years.Sizing on Docs is a little...off, and it is a serious task to break them in - worth it in the end - so be prepared. I typically range from 7.5-8.5 depending on the brand of shoe. Docs run large -in length- and I would say on the smaller side in how they fit on the top of the foot. I ordered a 7, which is just a liiiiittle roomy lengthwise, but is incredibly, uncomfortably tight across the top of my foot, like too uncomfortable to just tough it out and break them in around the house. Since they're canvas I know it's not a good idea to take them to a cobbler to be stretched as the seams could bust. My husband stuffed them very tightly with paper (brown paper bags as we didn't have any newspaper handy) and they've been sitting packed with the paper for a few weeks now. I'm hoping this will allow them to stretch out enough to at least be slightly less uncomfortable for the breaking in process.

so I took her through a bunch of sample picture boots and she really loved the look of this boot
The Doc Martens were a Xmas gift for our 12 yr. old Granddaughter. She loves them and was very excited, as her first choice was a blue colored boot and we could not find her size anywhere, so I took her through a bunch of sample picture boots and she really loved the look of this boot. It was wonderful to see the excitement on her face Xmas morning. We are all very pleased with the product, with the delivery. Thank you for making my first amazon.ca experience wonderful. Maureen
