Scottoiler vSystem Automatic Chain Oiler - including 250ml Standard Blue Scottoil…

This is an invaluable piece of kit for any motorcyclist, whether a commuter, leisure rider or tourer! It takes away the concern and hassle of regular chain lubrication and most definitely extends the life of your chain! I have one fitted on my Kawasaki ZZR600 and Suzuki SV1000 and both chains are in top condition. I rarely need to adjust the chains and they do not visibly stretch as much as when lubricated manually. Scottoil also not only lubricates but keeps the chain clean too, unlike the 'tacky' aerosol products that are available on the market. This 'V' (vacuum) system connects to the probe on your carburettor/throttle body and uses the vacuum produced when the engine runs to activate a valve, which releases the fluid down a tube, to the chain, at a pre-determined rate. Adjustment of the flow rate is via a control on the reservoir housing and, although a little trial and error is required to determine the exact flow rate required, it's easy to get it set correctly. It can also be easily changed to suit your ride. Bear in mind though, if you spend a lot of time at slow speeds (i.e., commuting in London) you'll need a lesser flow rate, as fluid is released all the time the engine is running, regardless of speed. Similarly, if you spend all your time on the motorway, a slightly higher flow rate may be required. When the engine is off however, there's no leakage and no loss of fluid. You'll need a little bit of space to locate the reservoir (usually under the seat area) and the flow tube must be at the lowest point, although it doesn't have to be vertical: Both mine are set at a slight slant. Refilling the reservoir is easy, once you get the knack, via the breather tube at the top - this detaches to enable the Scottoil bottle tube to insert, so you have minimal leakage and mess (although keep a rag handy, just in case!). They say that a reservoir full lasts around 500 miles, but it really depends on your journey and the flow rate set. Mine lasts a lot longer and I do a mix of motorway and city riding on a daily basis. The kit comes with all the tubes, fixings and fittings you need. It's worth taking a bit of time to get it fitted and set up properly, then you can just forget about it, bar filling it up every once in a while. An easy job for any reasonably competent DIY-er. Anyone with a bike that has no centre stand, who has to lubricate their chan manually, knows what a pain it can be. This eliminates that completely. Really, Scottoilers should be fitted to every motorcycle as standard! They're such neat and logical pieces of equipment and it should be on every motorcyclists Christmas list!!

I had been thinking about getting this system for ages. I was reading reviews and watching videos and there was such mixed reviews. I finally decided to take the plunge and get one. It was honestly the best purchase I made. Chain is always looking nice and lubricated. I used to find with chain lube that after 35 or 40 miles you would start to see a build up of black residue, but on this system the chain is clean and well lubricated. Fling is minimal and only really occurs at around 60-70mph but none over the tyres and haven't seen much in the rim either. The number plate takes a couple of dots but its easy to wipe clean. I used to get a bit of chain splatter on the number plate with lube but I would have to use chain cleaner to get it off. This oil can be wipped off with your fingers. I highly recommend the scottoiler systems. I used to think it was for those who didn't want to look after their chain, which I might add, you may still need to wipe the chain down occasionally with a rag, but its great at keeping the chain well lubricated and if you follow the instructions, its simple and easy. Setting flow rate was easy and I am enjoying riding knowing my chain is being looked after as I go. I would definitely recommend this brilliant piece of kit.

Having just returned to motorcycling after a long absence (due to the usual combination of kids and family) one thing I didn't want to do was mess about with greasy chains. I hoped this oiler would make life easier. Fitting: Bit of a fiddle on a BMW GS but not beyond the ability of any DIY mechanic. I chose to use the included spigot and tap a thread into the throttle body. Obvious warnings apply - don't try this unless you know what you're doing. (Also - I wonder what cutting into vacuum lines or drilling throttle bodies would do to warrantees?) Use: Operates as it should. The only downside to this model (resolved - I think - on the electronic version) is that when the engine is running, so is the oil. Leaving the bike to warm up for a few minutes before setting off will therefore give you a real wet spot on your sprocket which then flings off onto luggage and rear wheel. Concern: I've got the flow-rate set quite high and I'm getting through a fair bit of oil yet the chain never really looks lubricated the way I think it should. Thinking this might just be a case of needing the special Scottoil to build up on the chain I left it alone for about 500 miles. My conclusion is that, if you only ride on dry days, a good film of oil will gradually build up on your chain which will probably only require an occasional clean to maintain it. However, the first hint of moisture in the air and all the oil seems to vanish from the chain making it look like it needs a bit of old-fashioned TLC from a spray can. (Alright - I exaggerate - I mean, if you get caught out in a shower of rain.) Conclusion: Functions as it says, quite easy to fit but I probably wouldn't bother to install one on my next bike. (Just figure out how many cans of chain wax you can purchase for the price of a Scottoiler and the over-priced special oil you need to fill it up with.)

The only problem I have with this system is that there may be nowhere to put the oil tank. My bike is only a 250, and it's a full-sized naked one at that, but I struggled to find a location for it. In the end the only place I could find room was under the seat in place of the factory tool kit, mounted horizontally, against manufacturer's advice. The only other option would have been to put it in my top-box, and that would have required drilling holes in the box and then trying to work out how to seal them back up. Otherwise it was easy to fit, and came with everything needed to do so. A simple test after installation (go for a cup of tea while leaving the engine ticking over) resulted in a small patch of blue oil on the ground under the rear sprocket just below the drip-nozzle. It works, and so I am happy. I just suspect that my almost horizontal mounting of the tank means it will need to be kept almost full in order to work. This is not a big issue, as being under the seat the tank is easy to get to and fill.

Bought this for a 2200 mile trip round Europe and the Alps. Easy to fit to my 2010 Yamaha XJ6S and scottoiler gives detailed instructions online for lots of bikes. Spend a while to set it up properly for one drop a minute and it works a treat. The chain and sprocket stay clean and well lubed and there is little "fling". It will pay for itself easily just on chains and sprockets alone. Just a word of warning, in Europe we hit a heat wave which made the scottoil thin out and I emptied the reservoir in 500 miles, and blathered the bike in the process. Was easy to clean off back home though. Buy one, don't put it off.

All mounting options are missing from the package I received. (parts 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14 on the photo attached). Update: The replacement arrived and has these parts this time. Updating the 1* review to 3* therefore.

This is my 3rd Scottoiler v system. The first two were fitted by Scottoiler as they are only half a mile from me. They went with the bikes when I traded them in. This time I have decided to fit this one myself as they provide good instructions on how to do this. I felt this product was selling for a bargain price, Ordering was easy using one click with Amazon. Deliver was a bit earlier than predicted and came within a few days. I am very happy with the product and very happy with the service.
