I've used these spades for over 20 years for digging drainage trenches, grubbing up unwanted rhododendron and the like - no pick or mattock required. It can cut small roots easily so is also perfect for transplanting shrubs and small trees as a large plug of soil with the roots and saplings is achieved. It is also good for digging stony or clay soils. It's much less back breaking than a rectangular bladed spade as the technique is to throw the shovel like a dart then lever the soil out. That's why there is no return flange on the blade for feet as this negates the technique. Enjoy yours!

I came across my first Faithfull drainage shovel about ten years ago and since then have bought another four because I keep loaning them to friends and relative who rave so much about them that I let them keep it and I buy another. They are excellent for digging holes for fence posts etc that are exactly the width and depth that you want (which was why I bought my first one), but then I realised how useful they are for digging out weeds and brambles without harming nearby plants. The 'all steel' construction means that they are exceptionally strong for digging out roots. If you don't have one yet then do yourself a favour!!

FANTASTIC for digging deep but small width holes. I bought this to make digging holes for a fence easier and have found it works wonderfully for potting plants, especially climbers. The small width allows you to keep the hole small, but allows you to go very deep.I recommend that if you get a fence post digger along side this. You use this shovel to break up the soil and loosen it, and use the fence digger tool to get the soil out of your lovely deep hole. I believe this turned a 2 hour job into a 1 hour job with this combination, so a slightly more expensive option but turns digging deep holes from a chore to an almost ease! I have had to lend this tool to others after talking to them about it, and they have all loved it.

I have nothing but praise for this product, don't think this is poor quality because of the price. I believe this would rival products twice its value. The shovel was purchase for digging 15 holes for concrete fence posts. The required holes were 660mm deep and the soil was heavy clay so a really good test for the build quality of this spade.The narrow width of the spade head was ideal for digging holes to just the right width and length so that I wasn't wasting concrete when it came to fixing the posts. The length of the head also allowed me to keep the sides of the holes nice and vertical.The build quality stood up well. As well as the aforementioned heavy clay soil there is a lot of flint stone in the ground. The spade dug all 15 holes with hardly a scratch or dent on either the edge or face of the head. There was no flex or damage to the shaft from levering loose the clods of soil as the holes increased in depth.Delivery was swift and the packaging was suitable for the transit of this item.I am 100 percent happy with the cost and quality of this product.

The spade is great and seems very sturdy. However someone decided to apply a very adhesive foil backed sticker to the spade which is virtually impossible to remove (see photo after an hour of scrubbing and soaking). Really annoying hence 3 stars.

I've used a *LOT* of these type of shovels in my working life and this is the best one I've ever used! The steel is unusually thick and although it starts to feel heavy after a lot of digging that weight helps with getting through tough ground quite a bit, especially if there's a rock in the way and I need to break through it. For this price I'm genuinely blown away! The welding that's supposed to keep water out missed a small stretch of about 1cm on mine but frankly it'll outlast my use for it before rust is going to be a problem! Honestly it's the wooden handles that break first anyway.
