Q: Can the assembly be reversed, allowing the open area for a 20 gallon to be on the left instead of the right?

No, it cannot be reversed. (But we really like this stand. It is well constructed and sturdy.)

Q: Has anyone actually put a 20g tank, high or long, on the bottom shelf? I'm seeing mixed answers.

I have a 20 gallon on the bottom. There may be room for a 20 gallon high at the bottom of you don't add the shelf. When I'm changing out water I need to use a small bucket.
