Westworld: The Complete First Season (DVD)Created for television by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, WESTWORLD is a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the evolution of sin – exploring a world in which every human appetite, not matter how noble or depraved, can be indulged. Exploring what it means to be human through the eyes of the lifelike AI “hosts” in the park, the series investigates the boundaries of an exotic world set at the intersection of the near future and the reimagined past. Meticulously crafted and artfully designed. Westworld offers its guests an unparalleled, immersive world where they have the freedom to become who they’ve always wanted to be – or who they never knew they were. No rules, no laws, no judgment. Live without limits. Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright and more star in this one-hour drama series from J.J. Abrams Bad Robot Productions and Kilter Films.]]> Review: Yes to Series - Loved this series. Definitely, yes. Thanks, desertcart. Review: High Concept and Thoroughly Thought Provoking Science Fiction Series - Awesome, visionary science fiction series takes Michael Crichton's book (essentially an old-west prototype of Jurassic Park) and uses that as a springboard for a dark, complex allegory with a modern treatment, including it's absolutely superb, polished production values and dramatic storytelling. This is real science fiction with an emphasis on self-consciousness, artificial intelligence, creation (divine, biological and artistic) and it's sociological aspects. Truly ambitious, extraordinarily intellectual with intelligent dialogue, and allusions to Paradise Lost, Shakespeare, and mythology as well as film making itself. The show's world and setting are very well done as well, from it's gorgeous plateau, canyon and sagebrush filled scenery, to it's stark facility and medical center. The memorable music and score are haunting and capture the mysterious, dark, creepy mood and chilling violence. The cast is excellent, especially Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris and Jeffery Wright. Hopkins steals nearly every scene he's in, his soliloquies are completely captivating -one of his finest roles. Let's not forget perhaps the most famous star of the show- the now infamous and iconic player piano (a brilliant symbol). This all adds up to a memorable and rewarding experience. A decent amount of extra content highlights many of the themes explored and the creative process. Another high quality show from HBO worth multiple viewings.Perfect for fans of open world style, quest-based video games.

Utterly Captivating, Great Cinamatography, Excellent Acting
Fantastic adaptation of Westworld. The actors are excellent in their roles (especially Anthony Hopkins and Ed Harris), and the character development is rich, nuanced, complex. The cinamatography is a visual feast with the beautiful backdrop of the Western USA. The storyline is fascinating, and explores things like artificial intelligence, emergent consciousness, and the drives that motivate humans to do the really odd, sometimes horrible, things they do for "enjoyment". There are many storylines, but the larger arc has only been hinted at in the first season. What really ARE the parts of the park that are of interest to the secretive group that monitors and funds it. It's not just a theme park - something, not the hosts, nor their storylines, is of critical interest to some very powerful people. What is the park actually doing? What is their long-term goal? Hopefully season 2 will give us some more hints. Looking forward to seeing Ed Harris and Anthony Hopkins again when the series resumes in 2018!

Try the free, first episode, on you tube. It's a great hook. Awesome binge material.
Acting, music, cinematography are EXCELLENT! The writing is top notch. I really enjoyed how the story unfolded. Yes, it may be a little confusing at times but it is all explained and fits to gather well by the end of the season; patience. This will irritate a lot of people but it has to be said - the story line will make you think and most viewers just cant handle that. I'm not a prude but I thought the nudity was a bit excessive. I would rather have seen more interesting camera angles which would let you know what was happening without seeing full nudity. I get it, I'm NOT offended, but they could've lowered the amount of nudity, and still got their point across. If they push the envelope a little more in the second season, this will take the spot as my favorite series, over - A&E Pride and Prejudice, Gotham and may be even Sherlock (but I doubt it).

Many Good Things, But Also Plot Twists That Merely Go Left
There are many twists and turns in the plot and story and while they are all internally consistent (as far as I can tell), some were just too outlandish. At least this viewer rolled her eyes on occasion. Specifically, the final revelation regarding the man in the black hat felt like too much. It felt like something the writers enjoyed springing on me and not like something that grew from the story organically. It simply didn't work for me. I think it could have, but not in the extreme form they provided. There was a logic there. Spoilers below. Dolores falls in love with William, a human who sees her as human. He loses her while attempting to get her out of the park and, though he searches, he cannot find her. Then he finds her and something in him snaps and he becomes evil when he sees her back in her programmed loop making romantic overtures to another guest? Well what did he expect? She is being controlled by humans who wipe her memory and set basic parameters for her behavior. This isn't proof she isn't a conscious being. It is proof she is being controlled and so not free. Of course, she wasn't fully free when he first met her either, but she was able to escape her narrative loop in some measure. Now, seeing her in her old loop with some other guy, William could potentially feel sorrow and a renewed urgency to free this conscious being from control. Instead, he becomes a sadist who terrifies his human wife and child at home (who "sense something dark") and tortures and rapes the androids in his spare time when he visits the park. Supposedly, this is to snap them out of their loops. That makes zero sense. Here is what it played like for me: a good and true man discovers that the woman he loves is faithless and that makes him a monster. Eye. Roll.

Better than I remembered.
Exactly as described. DVDs all play properly. Good quality video. Westworld was much better than I remembered. I was sad when it was removed from streaming.

Oui. Superbe premiere saison.

In the near future a Western theme park allows humans to do absolutely everything they want to "hosts" (androids - some machine, some of flesh and bone - and consciousness and feelings) whose memories are then wiped (mostly) so they can be attacked anew. The actors - all of them in the main roles and even the most minor parts - are incredible. My favourite is Thandie Newton. She plays a host and is a tiny, sometimes naked and abused, woman - yet she is almost viciously intelligent. Somehow she is fragile and vulnerable yet powerful. I felt more sympathy for the hosts and the humans due to her and Evan Rachel Wood's performances. No one in this is purely good or evil. Every scene was interesting; every actor compelling. It gave me lots to ponder about free will, slavery, desire, power and especially what makes one human . . .
