Don’t live life in a vacuum - drink from one!
Have you ever wanted just one glass of wine, but felt compelled to drink the whole bottle just because it’s open? The Vacu Vin solves that little conundrum admirably, and stops you looking like a lush! An open bottle allows air in, and the air oxidises the wine into acetic acid (vinegar). If you can remove all the air and stopper the bottle, no more oxidation, and the wine will keep for a few days. The way it works is really simple. Take a stopper, which is made in two parts, and wash it, shaking out the water afterwards. Reassemble the top and bottom parts and jam it firmly into your open bottle like a cork. Then take the pump and push the open end onto the top of the stopper, making sure you hold it down and grip the top of the bottle too. Then gently pump the plunger up and down a few times until you hear a distinct clicking sound. That’s it. The air has been removed from the empty space in the bottle, forming a vacuum, and anchoring the stopper into place. At first it looks like the stopper isn’t in properly, but if you try and gently tug it upward, you will feel the vacuum resisting. To release the stopper, push the rubber knob in the centre over to one side and you will hear the vacuum seal break with an audible hiss. Pour yourself a drink and reseal the bottle again. The instructions are pictorial and not that explanatory, but the Vacu Vin is hardly difficult to use. A little care the first couple of uses and you’ll be fine. Try to grip the bottle neck and pump end together with one hand vertically, and don’t tip the pump, otherwise you will not create a seal. I’d also advise not doing this on a slippery surface. The first time I tried my bottle slipped on the wooden kitchen table, which would have made quite a mess as the bottle was of course open. Pumping the bottle on a placemat gave it enough grip. After you have finished your bottle, wash and dry the stopper before storing, just so that you always have a clean one straight out of the box. I tested the Vacu Vin on a bottle of red wine, pouring a glass after uncorking, then sealing it for four days before pouring another. To my uneducated palate, the wine was perfectly fine and tasted the same as when I first opened it. I did the same thing the following day, and the day after that. The wine still tasted good to me. I would have tried a 7th day, but I ran out of wine! I’m really glad I bought this item, having seen it on YouTube. It allows me to have a single glass of wine when I want it without feeling the need (or using the excuse) to finish the lot because it would go bad. The stoppers are easily washable, and reusable, so this set is good value. Now that I’ve used it, my one regret is that I didn’t buy the set with four stoppers at the outset, but you can buy extra ones later. Useful kitchen tool rather than just another gadget...
There are already some excellent reviews on this item, but I hope these comments are still of use following the purchase of this kit based on a personal recommendation. Kits contents: The standard kit (as at May 2014) includes two vacuum stoppers and a pump handle. The stoppers slip easily into standard bottles, but still create a good seal. They are absolutely fine in the dishwasher. Ease of use: Well designed items work easily and that applies here. The pump is placed on top on the stopper and pulled up and down a number of times to create a vacuum - the less wine there is in the bottle the more you have to pump. The pump makes a discreet clicking noise when sufficient vacuum has been created. To release the vaccum just takes the pressure from one finger on the stopper to release the seal and you are ready to enjoy another glass or two. Length of time it will save wine for: There seems to be quite a bit of disagreement in the reviews on this. I suspect this is down to different wines reacting differently as well as to personal tastes. We have found that it keeps red wine well for up to a few days, but would not really go beyond that. Overall: There are an awful lot of kitchen fad tools out there and I was sceptical this might be another one of those. I could not have been more wrong - it works well, is simple to use, it is well made, and helps avoid waste: a true kitchen 'must have'! Thoroughly recommended.

A "Must Have" product for those who do not drink a whole bottle of wine at one time
I have used this product for over 25 years and I bought this one as a present for a friend. I am sure this will provide them with very many years of service. The stoppers can be washed in a dishwasher and the wine keeps fresh for up to a week. As this works by removing air and creating a vacuum with a tight seal unfortunately I have not found a product which works with the wide variety of "fizzy drinks" bottles

Works a bit - don't expect miracles though.
Works a bit. I've tried it mostly with white wines and have noticed that if I pump the air out of a bottle, wait a day and then try attaching the pump to the stopper and pumping again, there is then more air to remove which suggests that the seal is not perfect and does let some air in. When I've used it though the wine has been better after a few days than I'd expect it to be without using the Vacu Vin. I think it works even better if you pump the air out of the bottle once per day. All in all I'd say expect it to give your wine another day or two of drinkability but not too much more than that. Though maybe it depends on the kind of wine? I have only tried it with white of similar types. Still for £8 probably worth it.

Works Like a Charm! Keeps Wine Fresh for Days
The Vacu Vin Wine Saver Pump is a game-changer for wine lovers! It’s incredibly easy to use—just place a stopper in the bottle, pump a few times, and you’re done. The vacuum seal keeps wine fresh for days. The pump feels sturdy, and the stoppers fit snugly without leaks. It’s a must-have if you enjoy a glass of wine over several days and want to preserve the flavor. Highly recommend!

I Don't Keep Throwing Wine/Money Away Anymore!
This really really works - I am very happy with it. When I feel like a glass of wine, I can now have it without feeling guilty about throwing the rest away a couple of days later. I did my research online first and I was not aware that the best way to keep wine after being opened (also, shhhhh I know it seems like sacrilege..my favourite - Port!) was in the dark, and with this system, happily in the fridge. I wouldn't choose to do it with an expensive wine, not because I don't trust the product, I simply would use a humongous glass and after a refill the bottle would be empty anyway! But, seriously, living alone and often feeling like a glass of wine whilst curled up watching a film, knowing that I would end up throwing the rest away was always frustrating. The only thing that I had to get my head around with the Vacu Vin was to try and forward plan a bit because of the wine being cold. I didn't get a good result with leaving the wine in a glass on a warm radiator for like for evah innit! I pour some wine into a mug, put a small saucer on top and......yup! - bung it in the microwave! Shock Horror! I know. I have no shame - but it works for me. Before I get blacklisted by some secret wine tasting society, I hasten to add.. I would Not do it to a Chateau Lafite!. Joking aside, it is a great piece of kit. Easy to use and inexpensive. I highly recommend it. The only downside for me is that I don't particularly like plastic. I got the black one and I keep it in a kitchen drawer rather than on the drinks tray thingy - but that's just me. The simple, elegant, functional design is actually quite acceptable. En-hic-joy - Cheers!
