Decent quality
A decent quality alto recorder. Don't buy unless you want an alto recorder in the key of F. As with all Yamaha musical instruments, the quality is excellent for the price.

Not worth the hassle.
This is not supplied with a thumb rest, so you spend a lot of your concentration trying to keep the instrument from sliding down your right thumb which is it's main support while you play. Although I've been enjoying learning to play the simple, beginner tunes, there has come a point now whereat I don't think I'll be continuing with the recorder. I'd hoped the tenor would not tend so much toward the squeaky high pitched notes but I've reached a stage when every new tune seems to require more and more of these, which I wouldn't want to listen to someone else play so don't want to play either. The finger positions and quick finger gymnastics between awkward fingerings such as half covering a hole and stretching my pinkie to try to cover the farthest holes is becoming less and less of a challenge to be overcome as one to be avoided! I wanted an instrument I didn't have to tune but I think I'll try something else. I think you'd only achieve proficiency if you started as a child and persisted for years. Then you'd wonder why you'd bothered when you could have learned violin or piano or percussion.

Excellent quality at a good price
This replaced a recorder which I had had from childhood (in those days called a treble, rather than alto) which had been broken and glued together for years. It has a very good tone, is well-tuned, and is easy to play. I can strongly recommend it.

Definitely worth five stars
Yamaha is a great musical instrument brand and this simple alto recorder looks great and sounds amazing. I learned the descant recorder at primary school and I thought this next level of recorder would keep me occupied during the latest lockdown. The holes are further apart than on the descant, so it takes a while until you get used to the fingering. Once your fingers learn where they should be then it's downhill the rest of the way to produce a lovely sound.

Very impressive for the price
The recorder was one of my first instruments as a kid - with most kids of my generation actually, and I migrated from the descant to the treble fairly quickly, as I preferred the sound. I also have larger than average hands and found the smaller instruments fiddly. I swapped recorded for guitar for some years, and after my husband bought a Native American style flute, I started hankering for my "treble" days. I just wanted something to toot on once in a while for my own entertainment, and maybe jam with the other half (he has an F flute, so we're complimentary). I wasn't expecting something as good quality as this, with a nice case, solid feel to the instrument and a beautiful sound for the price. For sure - if you're willing to pay out lots of money, you can buy rosewood instruments, which I would love to own, but even my OH was surprised with how well it compared to his wooden flute. I doubt it will sound the same in 30 years, whilst his will probably sound as good, if not better, but all the same I'm very pleased with this, and is ideal for anyone who wants to try the instrument as a change from the descant.

Not that good for the price.
I was disappointed with this. It didn’t get off to a good start when it was delivered just put in a brown paper Amazon bag with zero packaging around it. Who does this ? It looks nice but I don’t think it plays that well particularly in relation to the bottom F. I’ve kept it as it will do as a spare but think Aulos are a better make. I think whoever packs these things ought to take more care, it’s one thing to shove a paperback in a paper bag to deliver but NOT a musical instrument.

tricky top notes
Bought this cheap treble just to explore whether or not to take up playing the treble again. I'm no expert, but in my view it sounds quite bright, and achieving the right notes/sounds is fairly easy until you hit b# and higher. It's either my technique, or the recorder - my bet is the recorder given the price. Regret not paying slightly more for an Aulos - however, it's done the trick and I'm hooked. Will certainly replace it though - sooner than later.
