If you love shooting film but don’t wanna go broke this is it. Highly recommend
TBH, I gotta say that Kentmere is seriously underrated. If you’re into black-and-white photography but don’t wanna burn through a roll of HP5 or Tri-X every time you go out, this film is a lifesaver. It’s made by Ilford, so you know the quality’s solid, but the price? Way easier on the wallet. Kentmere 400 pushes like a champ. I’ve taken it to 800, even 1600, and while the grain gets chunkier, the contrast stays nice and punchy. If you’re into moody, high-contrast shots, this film is a dream. It’s also super forgiving—messes up exposure? No big deal, it holds onto those highlights and shadows like a pro. Super easy to develop at home. Standard B&W developers like D-76 or Ilford ID-11 work great, but if you wanna really bring out that raw, gritty feel, Rodinal gives it some nice, pronounced grain. Scans like a dream, too—good detail, easy to tweak, and plays well with most scanners. For the price, Kentmere is a no-brainer. It’s got a killer look, it’s flexible, and it won’t make you cry every time you load a fresh roll. If you love shooting film but don’t wanna go broke, grab a few rolls and give it a shot. Highly recommend, especially if you’re into street, portrait, or everyday documentary-style shooting.

Good Film but Expensive to Develop
This is a great film that has a very nostalgic and vintage feel and it's the cheapest film you can buy right now*. However, please bare in mind that as a true Black and White film it takes a very long time and is quite costly to have developed. For example, Max Spielmann (a high street photography place found within Tesco Stores) on average takes 2-3 weeks to develop this film at the cost of £12 per roll. Gulabi Lab based in Glasgow develops this film at the cost of £13 per roll but you also have to spend about £3 to send the film to them with Evri or Royal Mail. They do develop it much faster, within a few days, however. While this film may seem affordable at face value, when accounting for development costs it actually does not work out to be the cheapest film you can buy. Currently, that would be Ilford XP2 Super. *Kentmere 400 costs £4.75 - £6.19 per roll and £12 - £16 to develop and scan. (£16.75 - £22.19) Ilford XP2 Super costs £8 - £10 per roll and £8 - £11 to develop. (£16 - £21) Ilford XP2 can also be developed with c41 chemicals, making turnaround extremely fast (hours to days rather than weeks). Review written on the 17th of April, 2024. Prices may have changed since then.
