Another Merrell Home Run
As a long-time fan of the Moab line, I can confidently say that the Merrell Men's Moab 3 GTX Hiking Shoes continue to live up to their excellent reputation. I've been wearing Moab shoes for years, and they consistently deliver on two key fronts: durability and comfort. These shoes feel fantastic right out of the box with virtually no break-in period required. The fit is true to size, and the support is perfect for long hikes or just everyday wear. The GORE-TEX lining is a game-changer, keeping my feet dry through wet trails and unexpected downpours without sacrificing breathability. The sole provides excellent traction on a variety of surfaces, from rocky paths to muddy trails. After years of wearing different Moab models, the consistent quality and rugged build are what keep me coming back. This latest version is no exception—it’s a comfortable, reliable, and incredibly durable shoe that I highly recommend for any outdoor enthusiast.

If you like the Merrell fit, they are great walking shoes
Merrell Moab shoes and boots are an ideal fit for me, this results in them being extremely comfortable, probably the most wearable ‘all day’ footwear I own. The best walking shoes/boots are the ones that fit you correctly, so if the Merrell fit suits you, they may be the only shoes you want to wear. I have had problems with plantar fasciitis for years and Merrell Moab boots have enabled me to continue doing long distance walks without the foot pain taking over. The rule of thumb for Merrell, as mentioned by many others is to go up half a size from your normal size. They tend to be a touch short in length but have a fairly roomy, round toe box, which helps with comfort on long hikes. The insoles are fairly good too, quite thin but they do have a reasonable level of heel stability and arch support. To help with plantar fasciitis I do replace the insoles with some that provide a greater amount of arch support. The GTX waterproof lining works very well, only on extremely wet and muddy hikes have I ever had the slightest amount of water find its way past the gore-tex barrier. Even when the boots are worn well past their best the waterproofing still holds up. Overall the Merrell Moab 3 are robust, very hard wearing, supportive and supremely comfortable. No break in period is required, they do soften and mould to your feet over time, but also feel great straight out of the box. Where’s the catch? For me there is just one thing that lets them down and that is grip. Certain conditions can prove challenging for the Moab 3, the redesigned tread pattern is generally better than that of the Moab 2, but unfortunately they are not at their best on very muddy inclines, snow and to some extent wet rocks. It is quite common to find the grip giving way in these conditions, necessitating a careful choice of route through tricky terrain. I personally accept the limitations in grip for the superior level of comfort, a trade off that may or may not work for everyone.

Rugged and reliable
I have been wearing Merrells for years and I’ve tried other brands; North Face, Arcteryx, Salomon but I keep coming back to these. I wear them everyday at home, work and on holiday and they are comfortable and hard wearing. I tend to buy a size up from my normal size and this works well. They are waterproof in normal wet weather walking around town but are limited by the low cut of the shoe so walking through deeper puddles or wet grass in more rural settings will be more of an issue but this is the same for any trainer style shoe. The sole is rugged and hard wearing and provides decent grip and is well cushioned being comfortable on rocky ground. I have run in these but they are not a dedicated running shoe and are more a good cross trainer/approach shoe.

Comfy and mainly waterproof
Third (or fourth) pair of these. Very comfy. Previous pairs have stayed waterproof for a while but then needed a quick spray of waterproofing.

Supportive shoe; Amazon stock half sizes
The shoe is supportive around the foot but retains enough flexibility, so that the shoe rolls forward like a good running shoe. That's helped by the rounded sole at the rear. The underside of the insole has additional support that locates the heel, with a small area of additional shock absorption. Under the ball of the foot is a larger area of the same shock absorption. The thick tongue is gusseted to the sides of the shoe to keep out debris and water. I haven't seen this type of Vibram tread before; it looks as though it is less likely to get clogged with wet clay. I tested it on mixed terrain of grass, gravel and stony tracks, tarmac, flat and slopes; absolutely fine. There was a minor amount of slap sound on tarmac. A classic shoe. Despite simple lacing, the shoes stayed laced up. I was planning on walking part of the English Channel section of the South West Coast footpath (The Salt Path), but my foot is swollen due to gout, so I'll see if that's possible. I mentioned that Amazon stock half sizes, as the high street outdoors retailer I tried didn't

A good looking shoe, but oddly placed stitching in the heel caused blisters.
I really wanted to like these as they seem grippy and were comfortable to start with, but unfortunately after just 5 miles of hiking I developed pain in my right toe and nasty blisters on the heels of both feet. I have never had this issue with other boots and shoes I've worn. The shoes seem to fit OK and I wore decent merino socks. The issue, for the blisters at least, appears to be ridges in the stitching down the back of the shoe. This rubs on your heel as you walk. I thought about keeping them and trying them again but shows like this shouldn't need wearing in (but none of my previous Goretex hiking shoes or leather boots have needed this), plus the thought of doing any more miles in them led me to return them for a refund.

Comfortable
Very comfortable and supportive. Seem to be well made, and kept my feet dry in light showers. So far so good.

Almost perfect shoe for what I was looking for. 10 Wide gave me enough toe room to be comfortable. It has enough cushion around the ankle. The back lip doesn't rub on my ankle. So far the shoe doing durably. The main problem is the cushion on the bottom of my foot. The standard they have is terrible so you almost definitely need to buy a dr.scholls insert or something wayyy better.

Bought this to replace an older pair of MOAB 2 shoes. These are fantastic, fit well, very comfortable and great colour as well. Love them.
