Hot Dog: (Winner of the 2023 Caldecott Medal) Review: Wonderful pics and story! - This is a wonderful picture book with bright interesting pictures to explore and talk about with kids. The story of relieving the stressed out dog with a soothing trip to the beach is wonderful. We relate at people too! Love this. I have shared it with kids , ages 4 to 12 so far. Review: A wonderful treat of a book! - In poetic text combined with lovely pencil, gouache on paper and Photoshopped illustrations, Salati presents readers with a delightful reminder of the need to enjoy nature's beauty's once in a while. The story follows a dachshund getting walked around New York as his owner runs errands. Eventually the dog refuses to move one more step. Naturally he does this in the middle of the street. Luckily his owner knows exactly what to do. After taxi, train, and ferry rides, the dog and his lady arrive at the beach where the dog can run. At this point the book becomes wordless. No words are needed to show the dogs delight in playing with the waves, digging and fetching shells, and encountering a seal. Eventually they return home to the city with lots of new memories to dream about in their apartment. This adorable little dog is bound to win over many a young reader with his antics. Salati does an expert job showing the dogs' feelings as he droops in the heat and rebounds in the ocean breezes. Definitely made me want to be there as well. A book that manages to pay homage to both the beauty of the seashore and the wonders of the city. An fun book that more than deserves the Caldecott Medal it recently won, guaranteeing the book will be around for years to come for readers young and old to enjoy.

A very special book, highly recommend this one!
This is a wonderful book, I can see why it won a Caldecott Medal. Every time I look at it, I see one more really clever thing that the writer/artist has done to tie the story together. It's very simple, very few words but it's a great example of the art telling most of the story. The illustrations do a great job of conveying mood and feeling and it needs few words. That can make the book new and different every time you read it to a young child, they may spot the subtle things or the reader can point them out. And who doesn't love an adorable dog, who gets out of the hot summer city with his kind owner for a special day at the beach?

Not many words
This is a nice book and the illustrations are good. There are very few words to describe what is happening but that leaves room for me to ask my kids what they see is happening in the story. Not what I expected but I like it. My kids are not very thrilled by the book but they like the pictures. Better for my 3 year old.

Love this. We literally laughed out loud.
A fun family classic that everyone will enjoy. As dachshund owners and caretakers, we too relate to the fun and funny content that is wiener dog related. This story is fun for everyone.
