Hello Lisa, thank you for your question. The governing bodies on food safety like the FDA and the European Food Safety Authority categorize TiO2 as safe. It's really important for us to follow the guidelines from established bodies and authorities, especially given the amount of sheer anecdotal advice about nutrition out there. It's also important to distinguish the different types of TiO2 used in the food/pharma/cosmetics industry. TiO2 "nanoparticles" are less than 100 nanometers, and are usually found in mineral sunscreens and cosmetics. This category is usually the focus of safety studies and controversies. We use the larger molecule that's typically used in food. These types typically don't accumulate in or bypass the intestinal wall due to size. The larger molecules provide that white pigment. The nanoparticles are not that good at producing the bright white cast, which is why they are put into cosmetics and sunscreen, rather than as food coloring. The most well known of these IBS studies were conducted on mice in a University of Zurich study in BMJ. The study abstract does acknowledge this difference in size in different TiO2 substances. Many more studies need to be conducted in order to come to a definitive, policy-changing conclusion, preferably on humans rather than mice, and with full double-blind trials. We await these studies to be done. Of course, people are all different. Anecdotally, our consultant pHD actually has suffered from ulcerative colitis, and has found no adverse effects when ingesting our TiO2-containing formulas. There are many reasons that we use non-artificial coloring for some of our products; some formulas contain light-sensitive ingredients that may degrade without a protective outer coat; some formulas contain multiple ingredients in various forms (paste, liquid, powder) that can be unappetizing if encapsulated with just clear gel. Cosmetically speaking, many customers portion out their vitamins and supplements for the week, and distinctive colors help them tell the various supplements apart from each other. The majority of our formulas, if they contain coloring, use either a naturally-occurring color in the formula or natural carob.
