Counseling and Psychotherapy: A Christian Perspective Hardcover – January 1, 2011

I am awed by professor Tan’s exhaustive review of Counseling and Psychotherapy approaches in general, and more specifically of Christian counseling. He cites about 2,000 references of research studies regarding the effectiveness of the different therapies. Each of the many different therapies has a different emphasis in the treatments used, and professor Tan explains these treatments well. Thus, in deciding upon a therapist, the potential patient should ask the potential therapist about his or her treatment emphasis. Also, if the treatment plan eventually seems not to be helping, the patient should stop therapy with that therapist and look for another one. One criticism professor Tan has of many therapies is that they do not recognize man’s sinful potential. Professor Tan has received many awards for his work in the field, and this excellent book is one more indication of his expertise.

The comprehensive and scholarly review of the theories, principles and effectiveness of the bewildering forest of counseling methodologies is an excellent overview of the spectrum ( but definitely not light reading) The superb third section is biblically sound and a practical integration of scripture, prayer, the Holy Spirit and the personal requirements of a counselor.I am purchasing the Kindle version after first purchasing the hardcopy. I plan to restudy the book where I can highlight, annotate and copy some of Dr Tans excellent summary listings.Highly recommended for anyone involved in, or interested in effective Christian counseling.( also recommended is Gary Collin's very practical Christian Counseling 3rd Edition: Revised and Updated

The book is thick lol, worth the read

Great text that provides an excellent overview of various counseling theories and a review from a Christian perspective as well. The book is very clinical and thorough. Tan also provides some excellent information about Christian counseling theories as well toward the end of the book.

I found Dr Tan's book "Counseling and Psychotherapy to be an excellent study and tremendous value. It provided a great overview of the broad range of counseling theories and offered the strengths and weaknesses of each method. At the close of each chapter the author provided a concise accessment of the theory's application from a Christian point of view.

I am a grad student at a secular university. This was extremely helpful on helping me know how various psychological theories blend with the bible. I also plan to practice as a Christian counselor. This book was refreshing and very insightful.
