Hi madmc, for starters, turn off the camera, remove the battery and wait for 1 or 2 mins, then return the battery. Turn on the camera and follow onscreen steps for the initial setup. Use the wheel button for navigation. This Sony camera is NOT a touch screen. -Ely

How do I upload pictures to my computer with this camera?

Hi, when trying to download or import picture files from this camera to your computer, first is to connect the supplied USB cable from this camera to your computer. If you are using Windows computer, an AutoPlay Wizard will appear on the screen and click Open folder to view files - OK - DCIM then copy the desired images to the computer. If using Mac computer, after connecting the camera to your Mac computer. Double-click the newly recognized icon on the desktop - the folder in which the image you want to import is stored. Then drag and drop the image file on to the hard disk icon. Hope this helps. -Ely

Is there a memory chip I need to buy to store photos

You have to buy the memory chip separately. It does not matter how many GB, as far as as quality is concerned. If you are just an average photographer, you are not going to store thousands of photos in your camera.
