If you aren't an athlete, and just looking for general supplementation, you can definitely take less than the recommended amount, which will make the product last much longer! The capsules have no fishy or oily smell. The capsules come very well packaged in a sealed bottle. One issue I have found with this Omega-3 supplement, as well as with every other I've tried, is that it does cause Fishy tasting burps. I've found that freezing the capsules and taking them right out of the freezer helps prevent this side effect from happening. Over all i'd highly recommend this product as an Omega-3 supplementation for athletes, and for your general health.
