Eddy is correct... Compounds are the most aggressive, followed by polishes and then the waxes.

Can you get the same results using this by hand with a microfiber towel vs. an orbital buffer?

Yes. I have used it both ways. Because it is only midway on the abrasive scale it does take a while to cut when doing it by hand. Hope that helps.
