This saxophone worked perfectly. I bought it for my elementary school son instead of renting, when I did the cost breakdown and realized as long as he played it for 1 year it was less than leasing an instrument. It is now several years later, it lasted 2 years in band, and he still plays it occasionally (at my request). Tip: Saxplained is a YouTube channel that lets kids get into playing the songs they want really fast. I credit the online music tutorials for helping my son enjoy using this saxophone beyond the songs he learned in band class.

For the money, this is an unbeatable deal. Basically, every thing you need to get up and running; so I think it would be great for students. As for me, I used to play regularly years ago but just wanted a sax in the present day to add some extra color to home recordings. As such, I did not need a Selmer or top flight Yamaha. This fit the bill and reminds me of the lower end Yamahas. It has decent mids/low mids. Top end is a bit shrill; but you get what you pay for. Word to the wise: Check this thing out thoroughly when it arrives. The only problem I had upon playing was that the octave piece was not working correctly The problem appears to have been in quality control: The cork piece that comes down on the opening was misset/misaligned. I tried to McGyver it; to no avail. Could have I returned it for a new one? Likely. But the time and hassle struck me as not worth it. I just found a $30 neck on Amazon and while it was not the same color and was not an exact fit, it plays just great now. So I am happy. However, if I was in a band where appearances matter, this solution would likely not be acceptable (unless you are UM: blue and gold!). So inspect it or have someone who understands the sax look it over for you.

I have never played a saxophone, but have wanted to since the 3rd grade. I bought this alto because I didn't want to spend a lot on an instrument I might not be able to play. I am starting to enjoy it now, 10 days on. I realize now it will take a long time to develop my embouchure, and that is the key to everything. However, I can occasionally play the C Major scale with somewhat decent tone. This is a fantastic sounding sax, and it looks great too. I switched to a Yamaha mouthpiece, which helped out a lot. The Cecilio mouthpiece was fine otherwise. I am also using 2.0 Hemke reeds for now, but will eventually use the 2.5 Cecilio reeds. Functionally, this is a great little saxophone, and a real challenge for me to learn, having only played flute prior to this. I am gonna stick with it!
