Q: Do you need to anchor it to the wall or can it be freestanding?

It’s sturdy on my hard wood floors & I don’t have it anchored. If I had little ones or pets, I would anchor it to the wall as a precaution. I wouldn’t want it falling on top of a child or pet as it is heavy enough to potentially hurt them.

Q: Do you have to use all 5 shelves or could you use 3 to make it shorter?

Based on where the top and bottom pieces connect, you could either have a 3 shelf piece with the "legs" extending part of the way past the top shelf (from the bottom half) or a 2 shelf piece with the decorative bar across the top (top half). Hope that helps!
