These work well and do their intended job, but you need to be careful as you dispense them or shake them open because they can tear down the seam and you wind up composting the ripped compost bag. This was a recurring issue at first, but I've learned to be more gentle with them. I'm not sure a more solid construction would be a great idea, as it would increase the decomposition time and make the overall product less effective. I'll keep buying these and hope some science magic makes them more durable, yet equally effective at decomposition.

While there aren't many options out there, these a pretty good, although I have found in the last boxes that the tear line doesn't always go clear to the end and the bag tears, making it unusable.

I suddenly realized that I was using a lot of plastic! My husband and I were buying all our trash bags from Costco, and while there was nothing wrong with that -- They're very strong and very cheap -- I have become aware of the steep price we are all paying for these oil-based products that never even break down in the land fill! So I looked for compostable bags that I could use to line my small waste baskets and also for pet waste. These turned out to be just the right answer! While they are certainly pricier than Costco wastebasket liners, they were the most reasonable compostable bags I found (I figure about 10 cents a bag.) They take a little getting used to, since they are softer and have less body than conventional bags. If you line your waste basket with them, be sure to put a paper towel on the bottom of the waste basket to absorb any little bit of moisture that comes through the bag - And one paper towel will do the job for quite a few bags, too. That said, they do the job just fine. I feel really good about using this product, knowing that I am part of the solution, now, instead of being part of the problem. When I have finished going through all my Costco tall kitchen and lawn and leaf bags, I will buy Unni compostable bags in those sizes, too.

It does everything I expect of a comparable bag. It feels like it might rip or tear, especially pulling a heavy load out of my countertop bin, but I've not had a bag rip or tear yet. Unlike most plastic bags, these are so easy to separate and open up. No having to wet your fingers just to get them open. Also, they have absolutely no scent that I can smell, though a friend said they smelled "slightly sweet", whatever that means. I'm not going to taste one too see if he's right. They tie up easily, and they haven't ruptured, even when very full and falling all the way to the bottom of my big organic waste bin. I'm very happy with the quality, and the price was right. They look nearly identical to the starter bags my city gave us, but these cost less to buy for myself.

We use a few of these each week. The fit our compost bin just fine size-wise, but unfortunately the bag is not quite tall enought to create a "cuff" around the top. I ended up using a small binder clip along the back edge of the bin rim to keep the bag from collapsing downward. A small concession, not a big deal.
