Wire might be 8", the switch is may 1-2" long.

Does it matter if i connect to the ground or power wire of my led light?

It ia a ball switch to make contact between the two. It has no polarity. It can be used to interrupt power OR ground. It doesn't matter.

Can I use this switch on the ground side of a 12v circuit

It completes your ground circuit
