Great affordable find!
I looked up many butterfly lores and so many were $30+ dollars and I did not want to spend that much! This was an excellent more affordable find and it has now lasted through multiple caterpillar to butterfly metamorphosis and now my kids are using it to put butterflies they catch outside. They observe them, paint and then release them. This came with painted lady butterflies which when we looked up was designated as a pest by the usda so we did not let them go. Initially we thought we were getting monarch butterflies but that’s because I didn’t read the title thoroughly. It is so amazing to observe and we have learned way more than the life cycle due to this piquing our curiosity! Very durable! Also easy to observe through mesh or vinyl sides. We have now bought a milkweed plant because they say that’s all Monarch caterpillars eat! We really want to see a green chrysalis. A good and funny book we found related to butterflies is called Butterflies are pretty....gross! Unrelated to this product but if you read this far so worth the read! Kids loved it!

Great kit!!! Kids loved it!
My kids and I got this kit for a summer project together and we had a blast. It was so great to see each stage of the life cycle. We received 5 caterpillars but only 4 made it to the chrysalis stage. All four chrysalides emerged into beautiful butterflies. We fed them fruit and enjoyed them for a few days before we released them onto our flowers! We waved goodbye as they flew away. Would highly recommend this kit!

These Caterpillars are Healthy and Large
I got this for my 17 year old grandson’s birthday, at his request. He’s a nature guy and is really enjoying watching they grow. He sends me pics and they are huge. He said the whole set is great. I feel it’s a good value for the money, the instructions are clear.

Caterpillars looked dead- just traumatized
The kit arrived in time, but all the caterpillars are dead! Update: caterpillars are not dead- just “adjusting”.

Fun observational experiment.
We’re a homeschool family and I thought this would be a fun life cycle project. Unfortunately our caterpillars arrived already ready to go into their chrysalides so we didn’t get to observe them as caterpillars. All five butterflies did hatch though one had a funky wing so it didn’t survive. Overall I give the kit and all the extras it comes with 5 stars. The enclosure is easy to clean, easy to use, and I appreciate the book that comes with the kit. I am taking off a star though for missing the caterpillar stage. This could have just been a shipping timing issue though so I would still recommend this this kit.

Only 1 survived
It takes a lot for me to write a review because I have 5 kids and no time to do so. But this was so disappointing. We have bought several butterfly kits over the years and never had any issues but this time we only had 1 out of 5 caterpillars survive. For paying over $35 for this kit, that seems ridiculous and I honestly think they should refund me some money. We watched all 5 caterpillars grow over several days but when it came time to make their chrysalis’ , only one of them moved to the top of the cup and attached to the lid. The other 4 stayed in the dirt and consequently attempted to make their chrysalis’s there, and while at first we thought they may have been successful, they weren’t. It was obvious within a few days they were dead. My kids are really disappointed only one turned into a butterfly (you can see her still sitting on the lid in the second photo).

Fabulous gift for children or adults
My grand daughter said at first it was the grossest gift she had ever gotten. It was because the caterpillars were getting ready to connect to the lid and had shedded some part of their body. It ended up being the most spectacular..amazing thing she has ever experienced. She loved it...named all the butterflies and released them at Toledo Botantical Gardens. One of the butterflies landed on a flower and an elderly lady got all excited seeing this butterfly....and took a picture of it and my grand daughter got all excited that one of her butterflies was on this ladies camera ....one of HER butterflies. Its a wonderful gift !!!!!
