Fantastic!
This is the equivalent of going on a writing course. Don’t passively read it use it to work through a plot. I used it to transform a plot that I had my doubts about!

Stick with it!
My initial disappointment lay with the first chapter - it all seemed a bit of a slog and not nearly as good as some other similar Titles and Blogs which I have read (K.M. Weiland or Paul Tomlinson, to name but a couple of examples). However, my advice to you would be to stick with it - Chapter 2 et seq. make some really good, incisive and salient points which I have collected on PowerPoint and keep pinned above my desk. I'm a bit of a "pantser/plotter" hybrid and I find that these tips really work. The book also contains a number of charts/tables, but I didn't find that these helped the text greatly and, in some places, didn't even seem to map it properly. One slightly irritating theme I found throughout the book was an element of imposed psychology which seemed to me to be somewhat subjective and detracted from the book's intended objectivity. I may be overreacting . . .Not an expensive book, and well worth it if you can get past the first 17 pages!

Still working through it
The problem with writing a book about novel writing is that everyone's novel is different and so you can't give step by step instructions to everyone. If only I'd realise that and stop buying "how to write" books! But this one, for me, has given me at least one nugget "at the right time". I've read something here that I was ready to believe and act on. That might not apply to everyone. This book does seem to be quite insightful and written by someone who knows their subject. I'm still working through it so I can only really give a first impression.

Good if you write this way
A detailed analysis of how to write a good book, but only if you as the writer can write in such a way.I also found the fact that every pronoun is "she" rather wearing, and think it should have been mixed up a bit. After all, I as a writer am not a she.

Good if you buy both
An interesting book, but unclear how to put it into practice without the accompanying workbook.
