Does this provide lift assist? And is it truly soft close where the lid would slowly close without smashing fingers on the little ones?

For my application----a heavy 3/4 " plywood box lid---it works very well. The difficult part for me was the determination of how heavy my lid was and then what size gas spring I needed. I tried several other devices before trying this device. It does help with lid opening effort and reduces to a very acceptable degree the closing force--no smashed fingers possible unless you pull lid down with force. In an attempt to determine my lid lifting weight, I used a digital luggage scale which indicated a liofting weight of about 18 lbs-----but this unit talks about 44lbs, so good luck with lid weight. My lid needed 2 units and I could not be happier----my third attempt at finding a good device.

I have a lid that if you flattened it out it would be 51"l x 38"w x 1"t with aluminium corners and edging alaround. are these strong enough?

Depends on the composition of the lid - metal wood, thickness of material, etc. Our lid measured 36"x48" 3/4" solid wood and the hinges easily handled that weight.

Someone said the opening angle was 170 degrees. What is the correct answer? Do they open further than what appears to be about 90 degrees?

170 degrees is the open angle of the hinged support that’s being sold. The box lid force and angle depend on where you attach the support. You choose a bottom and top location to balance the lid at a low angle and stop at chosen open angle for the lid. The maximum strut force is when the gas spring is completely compressed, but the lid balance depends on how far from the hinge pivot that force is applied. An open lid angle less than 90 degrees avoids striking a window sill above the box. An open angle greater than 90 degrees is used so the lid doesn’t block putting in the largest object the box can hold. If the strut has more than enough force and extension to open the lid then there will be more than one mounting location that meets both goals. If it doesn’t have enough force and extension then no combination will meet both goals. You can use a few dots of hot melt glue some scrap lumber to the case to try several locations without making a lot of screw holes in it. Choose pieces that fit the base and lid so that the dots of hot melt only keep them from wiggling around and don’t carry the spring force. That lets you use just a little glue so it can be popped off once you find the right spots.
